How do I make him see the error of his ways

A friend of mine unbeknown to me has now gone three weeks without a drop of alcohol having passed his lips.
Now I had sort of noticed he hadn't been out drinking with me but just presumed he was getting his fix elsewhere, but after having a "talk" with him mid week I found out he has been off the stuff and now that he is three weeks into it he is thinking of making it a whole month dry and maybe more:eek::eek:

Should I have him checked out by a psychiatrist?
    Should I call the Samaritans?
IS there any where I can get help for him or is too late?

This is a tough one to be sure.

Has he been avoiding licenced establishments completely, or has he been going but not drinking?

Avoiding licensed premises and anytime anyone offers to bring booze to him he tells them not to come he is busy or out!

Has he been, well, looking after himself, of late?

Check his bathroom - any sign of moisturiser?

    Are his nails non-bitten?

If so, it could be more serious than we think.

I don't think there's any hope for him :( best stay away or you might catch something

I think the only hope for him is a good switchin' and then some cans to recover!

This is a severe case alright.

Does he like football, or Rugby for that matter.

Someone could go around to his for "a cup of tea" and then pull a few cables from his TV, nothing too bad now, just minor damage, all for the greater good.

This will force him into seeking alternative arrangements for sport watching, at which point, you need the co-operation of all concerned friends, nobody is "staying in", but all are going to the pub.

He will arrive to the pub, all ready for a "7up" or a "oranje juice". Allow him to drink one of these, just one, then start on the "ah, are you not having a pint", "Ah go on sure, it's been three weeks now, you know you can do it anytime you want, you've proved that to yourself" blah blah blah...he'll eventually crack, and drink a pint.

    :D

He is a fan of the EPL but has all the channels and no reason to leave to watch them he used to love a few beers and a game of pool or snooker but not :( even those fine pursuits will tempt him to go drinking, luckily there are no signs of moisturiser or other "products" in his home or I would already have admitted he was gone.

I think I may have to get a group together so we can all go to his home armed with booze to tell him how his lack of drinking is affecting us all. Probably better is we are all really really drunk first so we are all capable of expressing emotions.

Jezzzz, has he seen the bats snakes and spiders yet ?

I think he should be rushed over to the bar asap .I am sure igor could rustle up some conncoction to bring the man around and back to his senses .

An intervention might indeed be the way to go...

Other random ideas might be, get some foreign beer and tell him it's very rare, once off kind of chance to try it. Or ask him to taste one under the pretence you think they might have changed the recipe.

Is there any wimmins about? ... perhaps they with our wimminly ways might charm him into having just one?
With the promise of rasher sambos later?

Appeal to his patriotism. The moeny that he is not returning to Irelands economic growth in pubs is hurting all of us. There is only one right thing for him to do!

Indeed, try smuggling some vodka into his OJ. After a glass or two he'll be back off the wagon.

Don't worry it'll only be temporary , Paddy's day is coming up, that'll sort him out :D

Do it the brainiac way and bring to the sauna, while inside, instead of pouring water on the coals, use some vodka. Simple really, he'll come crawling back in no time.

A good wedding/christening or a funeral should sort this out, if none of the above is on the horizon make up a reason for a session(use your imagination brother, its important),tell him your going away, you got a promotion, your girlfriend wants threesome with her hot sister or something worth celebrating.

Good luck, hope he gets well soon

Wow this is bad... real bad! Is he under the thumb by any chance

This needs to be sorted immediately and nipped in the bud or before you know he'll catch that fitness bug  This evening, don't leave it any longer, round up the gang, grab a few slabs of beer and land on his doorstep. Once he opens the door, immediately, and I can't emphasise this enough, stick in your foot so that he can't close it. Push on through to the living room, sit him down, hand him a beer, circle him and no one drink until he starts! He will succumb!

there is no woman involved at all, that would be a nice explanation if it was anew woman he was trying to impress or an a woman hassling him but sadly no excuse like.

Im going to round up some of closest friends his favourite dog and some beers and then all of us including the dog and the beers are going to tell him how much his lack of drinking is upsetting us and if he doesn't sort this out we will kick the f**k out of him as its the only sensible thing to do.

Well a buddie of mine Now recently went through this "Phase" his excuse was that he was saving himself for a good house session so he can drink his Saki. He didnt give in until last sunday after not drinking for 3 weeks. I am now prooud to call him a Friend.#

Anyway, Brother, It is serious. Tonight is the First night of February and a Friday. As was said go to his house. Tell him he has proved himself manly enough to stay away from the Beauty that is Drink and that in the New month he should start again!

Go forth brother and Report back with good news.

I was all set to give myself a substantial pat on the back, having gone almost three weeks sans alcohol meself but it would appear from this thread that this may actually be serious cause for concern. I was really hoping to go a whole month without any beer but perhaps I am making a grave mistake. I appeal to the sagacious counsel of the BG&RH brethren to advise me on my immediate course of action.

pull him off the wagon before they take him away to metrosexual land or, god forbid, he takes up a hobby like jogging.

The men of ireland used to be good, hard, wise, drinking men. Give him the Shane McGowan biography or somethin

I'm sorry Almighty, when I say 'sans alcohol' I mean without alcohol. I suspect this clarification may be a bad thing.:(
