You're not the only person who will have left after the Junior, though statistically, the earlier you leave education, the more likely you are to end up unemployed.

It's not necessary to do a Leaving to get an apprenticeship, but with the dwindling numbers of apprenticeships available, many employers look for it.

Yes, it's hard enough to find a proper apprenticeship with someone who will keep you til you finish your time. Be VERY careful of any 'apprenticeship' where you are not registered with a college.

If you have a family member who will take you on as an apprentice and you are absolutely sure you will be able to finish out your time with them, go ahead.

I understand when you say you don't want to do a Leaving. Have you considered a Leaving Cert. Applied? I know in our school the LCA students do a range of introductory courses in many trades - plumbing, electrical work, welding, tiling, carpentry etc. and with two two week work experience placements a year (some of them with tradesmen) they seem to like it.

Talk to your careers guidance teacher. Consider all options.

I've heard of people being refused apprenticeships because they hadn't done their Leaving Cert.

Seing as how you have to stay in school for another year, why not stay for one extra? In those two years, you could have your Leaving Cert done (i.e. don't do 4th year), which would increase your chances of jobs/apprenticeships in the future dramatically. You may have your heart set on becoming an electrician now, but trust me that over the next few years your ambitions will change. It just may happen that you will need the LC sometime down the road. I almost dropped out of school after 4th year (I had a plan and all!) - I came to the conclusion, however, that staying in school for two years just might benefit somehow, and I'm glad I stayed; not doing the Leaving Cert would have been up there on the Big Mistakes of My Life list.

Now, having said all that, I know you wrote, "Please, Do not suggest for me to stay and do leaving I realy dont want to do it and i would rather go for an aprentiship," but I figured that 'not wanting to do it' isn't a great reason, and nowhere does it say that you can't do both the LC and an apprenticeship.

As an LCA coordinator, i recommend that you look into it. In our school students do modules (irish, english, engneering, maths, computers, art etc)

It is true that you would be eligable to do an apprentiship without a leaving cert, but from contacts in Limerick and Tralee institutes of technology, junior cert students struggle with the maths requirements of aprenticeships, lca students with those 2 extra years of maths have an advantage. Plus they are more mature and have picked up excellent ict skills as well the abilty to do interviews, and the most important bit, students will have done 4 blocks of work experience. In our school they do this every friday. This work experience will allow students to sample 4 different types of work, electrician, plumbing, retail sales, creches, farm work, carpentery etc

Students who hate school, enjoy lca, because its practical based, student focused and students are rewarded for attendance and work over the two years.

I suggest that you talk to your careers advisor, other students etc, belive you me the two years will fly

best of luck with your decision

A cousin of mine is looking to be an electrician. He was intending to drop out after the JC but found it next to impossible to find a place for an apprenticeship without his LC under his belt. Even his uncle, who is a self employed electrician, wouldn't take him without one (with emphasis on the maths part), it's a policy he and many others have. Unless you have a sure thing set up, I'd strongly recommend getting your leaving done.

why dont you just do your leaving cert? i know it seems like a long time, but it flys by so quickly. it seems like yesterday i was in TY. i wouldnt leave school if i were you. keep your options open until you are 100% positive on what you want to do with your life. i've only decided what i want to do now, and i thought i knew exactly what i wanted to do back in TY. your mind will change, so the best thing to do is ride it out. it will fly by.

and plus, the worst thing that could happen is you leave school, the apprentice thing doesnt work out, you wish you had done the leaving, and you are screwed. so dont leave school if there is any possibility that it wont work out, or if you have any doubts if this is what you rly want to do. i suggest you do the leaving. you'll get through it, and you'll be glad you did.

That happened my cousin. Left school in TY couldn't get work anywhere. He had to go back and do the LC and now he is fully qualified plumber. This happened at a time when they were crying out for people in the industry.

ok i left school when i was 17 and i did love it 4 2 years when i was doin nothin, but when i got a job wit mercury electric i got screwed over, it took me nearly 4 years to get registered wit fas, my mate did his leavin, scraped past and got a job within 2 months, if i were u i would stick it out, it really is worth it.i would go back if i could but its way too past me, its only 2 years, and trust me they are good. dis is comin from a 20 year old only startin my career in electrician and i will get grinds to keep up wit de class so trust me do it when ur finnished school, i know school is so hard but it really is worth staying. and by the way im from a posh part of dublin so its not steriotypical of scum to do this, although there is a lot of scum. but really mate stick wit it 4 2 years i guarentee u it will be worth it, and anyone that says they got a job when they left they are talkin **** or their father is in with contractors.

If my calculations are correct, won't you be turning 15?

I think you should do TY first so that you have more time to think about it.

:)hey my name is charlotte and i need some advice...Im 15 and Im doin my JC in June next year which im very confident about, i will do well in it because i am farely bright in school. The thing is I want to leave school after my jc and get a job. I know jobs are gone dead because of this resession and all but it cant last forever. the job im planning to do is something to do with dogs. Im really into dogs i love them. I wanted to be a hairdresser too but that all changed when my doctor told me and my twin sister we couldnt because we were born with CLUBFEET. And we get a lot of pain while standing up for long periods of time. So with this severe problem i was born with , Im not going to get jobs thrown at me, Theres only a hand few of jobs we can do...Like working on computers sitting down. But i would find that job boring... People should have a jobs with something they would enjoy doing... Like if ur in2 hair be a hairdresser...Education....possibly be a teacher...I dont really like school... People keep saying 2 me "SCHOOL IS DE BEST DAYS OF UR LIFE!" maybe it is.....FOR SUM People! but dat saying is not all true 4 every1.... I just want 2 start working with something i love..Id even go 2 college wen im 16.. DO YU NEED UR LEAVING CERT TO WORK WITH DOGS??" Btw not a vet" Thanks please write bak xxxxxxxx;)

Realistically you won't get any sort of job these days without something more than the Junior.
How about doing the LC or better still LCA and doing one of the courses listed on this page?
    http://www.careersportal.ie/careers/detail.php?job_id=462

You should talk to the guidance teacher in your school.

Sorry Charlotte, unless you have some sort of a connection, getting a job is next to impossible even with a Leaving Cert.

I would strongly advise you to stick with it :(

I know you just wanted pure solid advice, but the advice is do the Leaving Cert of Leaving Cert Applied (LCA, which might be more suited to your needs) and just pass it. Even if the industry comes back, there'll be thousands of well-qualified workers coming back to work. An extra 2 years isn't much to ask for, when it could have a massive effect on your life.

I know you didn't want to hear this, but somethings just can't be glossed over. The LC is important.

Stay in school,if you hate it that much stay and do L.C.A.
I know how you feel,I hated school too and found most subjects pointless and boring,I stayed on to do my leaving but I mitched off most of the time and didn't take it seriously and got pretty bad leaving cert results
It's the biggest regret of my life and I'd give my right arm to be able to go back in time and do it properly.
2 years is absolutely nothing and if you stay on you will have greatly increased your chances of employment, you will even have options of what you'd like to do next(college,PLC course's,apprenticeship etc)
If you leave with just your Junior you will have very little choice in what you can do,what happens if your apprenticeship falls through or if you just dont like it?

Stay in school and get your leaving, whether it be traditional or L.C.A.
You have the rest of your life to work so whats two more years!

The LCA would be a good option because of all the work experience. If you make sure and contact local vets etc. in plenty of time to arrange it, you could have quite an amount of experience working with animals before you apply for one of the many courses in the field which accept a Merit or better in the LCA for entry.

Hmm Charlotte I'd imagine working with dogs would have you on your feet a lot. Here are some possible career options for you, each link has a good bit of information about each career:

    http://careerdirections.ie/CD/DBAllCareerFrame.jsp?id=71 dog groomer
    http://careerdirections.ie/CD/DBAllCareerFrame.jsp?id=138 Dog Kennel worker
    http://careerdirections.ie/CD/DBAllCareerFrame.jsp?id=270 vet nurse

bear in mind all of these will require you to be on your feet.
