Tempremental macbook headphone socket

My macbook is a couple of months away from being out of warranty  so I am eager to get suggestions on this problem...in case it's a big one.

Basically it's exactly what it says on the tin, sometimes my headphone socket works, sometimes it doesn't. I do try it with a few pairs of headphones and none of them work. It was going fine until this afternoon and now it's broken again. It's intermittent but recurring.

Any ideas on what it might be? I'm reluctant to take it in just yet to the repair people because I'm worried it'll correct itself while there, and then they'll charge me for wasting their time and it'll probably break again. The volume itself works fine through the speakers, never had a problem with those not working. It's just the headphones.
