My iMac is slowly running out of space... 250gb is down to about 80gb at the mo

Need to free up some space.

iPhoto... This is the only bit of software that lets iLife down I thinks. Drives me mad sometimes. After using Picassa on the PC for so long and comming to this I still can't get my head around it.. Anyways, I seem to have a load of duplicate files.. Found on pic 4 times in the library.. Can anyone recommend software that'll clear all my duplicate photos and originals and thumbnails?? Pref free..

Also, something that'll find n delete all my duplicate mp3's... I've no idea where they come from, they just turn up..

Is there anything else I can delete that'll save space???

Is it easy or possible to upgrade the HD in the iMac(g5 intel)?? Have an external drive already but thats for backups....

You've obviously got both apps set to import mp3s/pics into their libraries which leaves the original/duplicate behind. This is the best and safest way to have it imo and it keeps everything organised. You just need to remember delete the original file afterwards.

Nope, after I import to the library I delete the original folder... same for MP3's. I've all my mp3's on an external HD, I imported them from that.

I think you get 500 photos scanned for free and then you have to fork out about 8 bucks for the full thing.

If you look through www.Macupdate.com you'll find alot of useful software.

Are you finding the duplicates within the app or in it's library folder? Afaik anytime you modify a pic in iPhoto it keeps a copy of the original.

In the app... I know the photos in the albums are links to the photos in the library in iphoto. I haven't checked the folders yet.

I liked the way in picassa the photo in an album was a link to the photo in the HD, not a link to a link to the photo. I found it easier to just have folder of my photos organised and use picassa to browse them...

You think 80Gb free of 250Gb is bad?
    Try <5Gb of 40...

For more general cleanups, I use two apps: Cocktail and MacJanitor. On MacJanitor I run All Tasks every now and again, and on Cocktail just the one called Pilot.

One thing you might do is to keep the main body of your music on an external hard drive - you can get an AirPort Express base station dedicated to plugging in your music hard drive and playing it remotely.

Sure my own laptop is worse, last time I checked it was 400mb of 80gb... Runs really slow... Must sort it out someday..

Anyways, back to the mac... Need the space cause we've a good bit of vid footage to edit soon. Checked the mac last night and the GF never deleted the files from her last show.. Got back about 40gb of space...
