Buy my own decoder for chorus ntl?

    Hi All,
I subscribed to chorus ntl and they gave me a Sagem decoder (ICD60-31). It worked until 2 days ago when it inexplicably started rebooting itself every two seconds and it's completely unusable.
I called NTL customer service and they will replace it when a tech guy will come to my house and validate the fault. I think it's gonna take at least two weeks for this.
Since the Sagem decoder is very lame, I'm considering to use this opportunity to buy my own decoder but I don't want to waste my money buying a decoder not compatible with chorus ntl.
I'm not an expert about decoders so I wonder what do I have to verify before proceeding with the buying.
    Any suggestions?

You legally cannot use any other decoder other than the Chorus/NTL provide you with.

Tell them to you want a discount on your next bill for the downtime - they are usually pretty good at giving one!

How come? This is unacceptable from my point of view...
I regularly pay the bill, I own their smart card, I'm not doing any hack.
I just want to be able to watch lost on sundays :)

I called them several times to ask for a replacement but yesterday morning they told me that before proceeding to replace the unit I have to do some tests with them, therefore I should be at home an not in the office. Yesterday evening I was at home and they told me to wait one day because an upgrade was in progress in my area. This morning I called them again and they reply saying I have to call while at home to do the *famous* tests... that's crazy!
Anyhow, it is *technically* possible to use another decoder without doing any hack, simply buy one and use their smart card?
    Thanks for you reply

You don't own the smart card, they do. They own the box too. Tell them to get someone there with a replacement on X date or to put you through to cancellations. Cancellations have the power to dispatch engineers the next day where as customer care make you wait 7 months. Excellent service...

    What he says ^^^^^

You are only renting a service. They own and control everything.
