    Hi,

I need to buy some stuff at lunchtime today and dont want to look a d1ck or get the wrong thing.. I was fitting a new immersion element to my hot water tank last night and used PTFE tape to seal the thread but its still leaking.. no amount of ptfe tape seems to work, overtighten and it just gushes and needs to be done again...

I know the stuff I need is some kind-of plumbers putty but need to know ther term for it and to get the right stuff as the tank gets bl00dy hot....

So if anyone can help me with a name of the stuff or a product name I would be very grateful...

    Thanks

    FBP.

It's a while since I did one of these but if my memory serves me correctly you don't need PTFE, flax, bosswhite or similar on an immersion. There's a gasket at the top which will seal it. Are you sure it's tight enough? Are you also sure the top of the cylinder isn't distorted /uneven?
