Thoughts on repairing/replacing a fret on an old electric guitar

    Morning all,

I have a very old crappy Tanglewood electric that has a worn down first fret which makes the 1st string unplayable when pressed. I'm not playing it any more myself, but have given a friend the loan of it for practicing with as he's learning. The other 5 strings are unaffected, just the 1st. I was wondering if anyone's ever replaced a fret or if it's a major job that probably isn't worth the hassle?

How much is worn down on it? Would there be enough fret left for a redressing* the frets?

*can't think of the right term at this hour of the morning.

You should be able to get it fixed with a fret dress. If it needs a full refret its going to cost a bit though.
A decent setup might be all thats needed to sort it out too.

I got an Aria Pro II years ago for next to nothing because the frets were worn right down. I forgot about it for years and only recently got it repaired. I couldn't believe how well it was done. Cost me about €80 or less in Monastary Music in Clondalkin (01 4643389). He didn't even have to replace any frets. Good as nearly new.
