from previous posts you will know i am a novice at sports stuff, mainly using it to practise with my new 18 - 200 lens .
Anyway was at a Leinster cup match today , great atmosphere and game , my action shots were few and not crisp , the game was too exciting , just wondering do you experts leave the lens wide open , i was shooting manual and realised i was at f 8 , or do you usually shoot in S mode, and let camera detect aperature , or should i have just set the apertature as low as possible (f 3.5) .

    a couple of results on

Open aperture all the way. You need to freeze the action.
    You should invest in a 200mm 2.8.

When I shoot rugby, I shoot in Tv (Shutter priority) mode. With this, I set a shutter speed greater than 1/400. Depending on light, I bump up the ISO.

For your bright daytime shots, you should be able to get 1/800 or 1/1000 with ISO 200.

Sport is about speed, and freezing the action.

yeah , i'm nikon, i was just practising with my new 18 - 200 , as Paul said i should have used Shutter Priority mode , as its all about speed -- it was a great match , watching ireland and Leinster had turned me off rugby.

RCN - i don't think they are Mounties , you should have paid more attention to your education :D

Who are they so? Mounties are green as far as I remember and CBC is boys only.
And the 200 2.8's are great, I got an L series free! Just wanted to put that out there....to boast haha. ;)

They look like Mounties to me - the blue-green is them. Muckross are to be found in green-green.

I too was educated by Mounties. ;)

To be honest, it's best to learn to use the camera in Manual mode and have control over everything yourself.
Saying that, it's better to have the image slightly under exposed than slightly over exposed.

i thought they were Dalkey , the mounties usually only go to Rock matches , muckross to Gonazga matches -- it was a great motivator to play well ;)
