Asking for posters to let you know what their salary is is fairly personal, particularly as you have only 7 posts to your name at this stage & nobody really knows you around here.

If you told us why you wanted to know this & could show that you had a bona fide reason for asking (which I doubt), you may get a reasonable response.

Hmmm, let me think. No, you don't need to know my salary. :)

    Well said Billy.

......and some of us are paid a wage, not a salary. ;)

awh you guys are so mean, maybe op just wanted to make sure he wasn't been ripped off or not been taken for a ride. I know loads of people working in jobs where they could be earning much more but think they are on okay wages because no-ones ever told them different.

If that is so, he/she should have given their position and salary and ask if it compares well with those in similar positions.

No, they're dead right. Why would be go telling randomers our salary? Oh and OP, if you do think you're being underpaid for your role look at industry salary reviews. There's one on Irish jobs. And if you're currently in permanet employment you probably have it written in to your contract that you can't discuss salaries with your colleagues i.e. don't go in demanding a payrise because x and y gets paid more. A lot of companies have this in their contracts.

Rather not say, its a very personal question. Plus telling my position would make some aware of where I work. I'd rather not do that.

I don't think its possible to say, oh yeah €XX, XXX is a decent salary.

Maybe if you were more specific on the role you're looking at or you're working in at the moment we might be able to tell you what an average salary in that role would be.

    It depends on your age.

Government position... €197.37 per week, and one of our incentives is, if we own a dog they'll give us an extra €9 per week.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 71 ✭✭jenny-walsh

it also depends on what size of a company you work for, how many years experience / education you have and your geographic location...
i.e. Dublin wages as compared to Mayo.

If you're under minimum wage it's bad...

No the question was what our position is and what our salary is.

A decent salary as i said is above average industrial wage. I make more than that so im on a decent salary as far as im concerned. More would be better obviously :D

in all fairness i dont think he`ll be back . and i dont blame him. who cares how many posts hes had. do you really think you know the people on this site well because they`ve posted 5000 messages. i thought it was a site where you ask for advice and get advice and opinions with the comfort of anonimity. if you dont like question someone asks dont answer it!!! i think some of you spend too much time on here. obviously that doesnt apply to all of you, but some of the earlier responses werent very helpful. just for the record i would`nt divulge what i earn. thats my business i just would`nt have answered the question

I'm glad you felt the need to empty your thoughts onto the screen................not.

It's got nothing to do with postcount, it was a BS post to begin with.

It is nothing to do with postcount per se, rather the fact that the poster is not well known. If they had some level of history on boards whereby, based on their previous posts, you could determine whether their intentions were good or not. It is about earning a wee bit of respect from your fellow boardsies before you start getting 'up close & personal'.

In this instance a poster with very, very little posting history came on to boards & asks others how much they earn. That's a very personal question in my opinion. Why does he/she want to know this? He/she is not prepared to say by the looks of it. He/she has also not bothered to tell us what his/her earnings are. He/she is just being nosey from what I can see.

Regarding your comment about 'anonymity' on this site... Some posters may chose to remain anonymous while others do not. Boards is more of a community to me rather than just an internet hole that you dig into for information occasionally.

Decent salary is relevant. What's decent in one place is poor in another and so on! To me a decent salary would be something like the Porsche CEO's salary (if I wasn't living in Dublin ;))

i believe the question was "whats your salary?" as i did`nt tell my salary, i did`nt answer the question. i agree the question was personal, but that does`nt mean people should be sarcastic in their answers. some manners would`nt go astray.

the reply from hill billy was at least constructive. point taken about anonymity. that approach in the first place might have would have shown people in a better light. it came across as bitchy.
