    hey,

got two offers on the table,

one is offer is the same/similar job to what i do now, more money, irish company. job prospects im sure are there but not on the level as the second offer. pros are id be the senior person in the area and be the top dog more or less. salary is about 15 k more than what im on now. cons: same job different company, very niche area so if i want to progress im probably looking at management

    second offer
    global company
salary is 5k more than job one (20 k in total) but its performance based. total different job to what i do now (so nervous). pros: global company, more job oppurtunities, change, the technology is very generic, cons: may not like it and have to start from scratch

    btw i work in IT

    advice?

    Difficult.

I've worked for both small Irish companies and a couple of the global ones. I also work in IT.

Could you rate the following in order of importance? It'll give us a better idea what kind of person you are.

    Working as a Manager
    Money
Being highly skilled in one or two areas
Having a broad (non-expert) range of skills in many areas
    Learning new things
    Change
    Job security

Also in job two i wont be hands on at all, its more a consulting level position. To be honest im not sure if im ready to give up the hands on stuff but at the same time i don't know what it is i should be doing, for all i know i might do very well in job two

1 Having a broad (non-expert) range of skills in many areas
2 Being highly skilled in one or two areas
    3 Learning new things
    4 Job security
    5 money
    6 change
    7 Working as a Manager

So it looks like the actual work (rather than the prospects or money) is the most important thing to you.

Could you try job two, and if it doesn't work out, revert to the old niche area?

Do you like your current job?

    I'd say Job 2.

I did IT in college though I don't work in that sector (thank God! :p)

But from what we were told, if you want to progress it's better to not focus on the technical stuff and instead take an overall consulting position. So maybe you will fall behind on technical knowledge but it won't matter as your staff will do that for you.

You'll be going in management some day so you may as well do it now.
And if it doesn't work out then you still have options

in reality i think in the long run there will be more money in job two. I just thinking in job two ill be a small fish in big pond compared to job one. I do like what i do now but as i say its very niche and doesn't really offer transferable skills other than analysis type work. Im 26 so i dont think i should be thinking about job security both jobs will put me in the 55k to 60k salary.

if i continue down the road of doing what i do now in job one it could send me down a cul de sac, at the same time i could transfer back, im thinking ill just grab life by the balls and give job two a go

yeah i find that in IT the real money is in contracting if you want to stay techie which isnt easy to get into if you dont have a skill thats in demand. for permies, management, consultaning business analysis seem to more lucrative

Good decision. You're 26, take the risk...
