    Hey everybody,

total airsoft noob here, but i will be making a short film soon and there will be an uber cool shootout in it. My question for you is, do airsoft guns make the bang bang?

They make a noise, but not the sound you're looking for.

not to a RS level, but they make a bang when the piston fires, and the gears

turn but nothing near a real gunshot

nothing like a real gun, just download a gun sound effect.

you just add you sound as a ADR in your post-prod, if your using final cut you can import a sound

Better to use PFC cap firing props. Bit on the pricey side though.

You could record an AEG dry firing seperately and use a combination of filters and EQ, you'd get a good sound from that, wouldn't recommend it for the AEG though

I don't think sound is going to be your only problem: no airsoft device that I know produces any muzzle flash either. So your shoot-out scene, if done with airsoft taggers, might end up looking very John Wooesque indeed, however with no visual cues whatsoever that any firing is taking place (lest you add muzzle flashes in post-prod and dub with RS sound effects) ;)

There is a debate between using blank firers and airsofts in films.
Airsofts don't sound real, and the muzzle flash will need to be put in, in post-production.
But with blank firers they don't sound exactly like real guns either, there is a distinct difference I think so either way I'd suggest getting sound effects off the Internet and just overlaying the sound over your images.

Here's a great site for free sound f/x that I've used before

Flashes aren't really that neccessary. There are such things as flash hiders:p

even with a flash hider you can still see a muzzle flash, it should really be a flash dampener or something...

a flash hider only stops the firer from being blinded, it only partially hides the flash

    from an enemy

The name flash hider is misleading though. It's not actually a flash hider, it's a flash disperser. The idea of them is to spread it out over a wider area as quickly as possible rather than let the flameblast extend forward a long distance. It does hide it in the sense that the flame/flash isn't as large and doesn't last as long but it's still there.

A flash suppressor is about 90% effective at eliminating a muzzle flash. Different animal altogether though.
