    Hi All

Basically I'm working for a multinational as a Field IT System Admin, i.e. I spend time being a system admin on customer sites. The customer I am with at the moment is coming to the end of their contract and have approached me about coming to work for them and I want to get a feel about how much people might think I'm worth as I have no idea what figures to talk to them about.

    Basically

    6 Years Exp
    3 X DCSE
    HP Server Certification
    MCDST
    One MCP away from MCSA

Im currently earning 38,000 plus company car and possibly considering a move to the public sector, less oncall and definetly no 3 am calls to get my ass to Limerick, Galway etc from cork...

Any ideas what I should start negotiations at?

    38,000 is very low!

I know people with two years experience on more than 40k.

    Certainly 45k miniumum.

Thanks...I might start negotiations at say 47 so and see how it goes. I'm just a bit unsure about how the public sector might pay guys like me,i.e. are they good or bad but I'm aware that the starting salary is crucial....

Company cars are extremely rare in the Public Service. Government Ministers, Garda Commisioner, President etc. only AFAIK.

Your in Cork and you have a company car. You don't have an MCSE.
I think your salaray is OK (if you are getting some sort of on call rate).

If you don't have an on call rate begin there.

In your position I'd be happy with 40K but deffo begin negotiations at 47

Public sector jobs are all about pay grades so you can just compare it to some other public sector job with silimar experience http://www.publicjobs.ie/cand/JobDetails_eng.asp?JobID=2945&hdnGUID=&hdnJobID=1875&sgDest=JOBLISTING

Without a degree or a masters you may not be able to get as much as you would with one thats just how the public sector works sometimes. Even if you are as qualified as you would be with one.

But you will def get over 40K and prob have a less stressful job by the sounds of it.

I would think €50k minimum. Nobody in IT works for less than 50k these days, unless they are swallowing the HR bull that alternative jobs are hard to get etc.

If you cant earn that go contracting.

    Heya

I actually do have a degree but just neglected to mention it in the opening post, sorry about that, I graduated in 2001.
Also this job will not come with a company car and I'm well aware of that so I want to try and grab that extra few grand over what I have now to cover that new expense...
