Anyone know any? I've got some stuff Abelton Live and a demo of Fruity Loops that I do my programming on but I was wondering if there was any others I could try out, preferably free and withoption of using your own samples. I've found some free programs before but they seriously lacked the sounds I wanted.

You could try out Dr. Fusion 2, I think it only allows you to load your own samples into 1 or 2 of the instruments but as far as free drum VSTs go its pretty decent, worth trying out.

This is my mate Grizzle Grizzles Myspace. He made a really nice 8 channel techno kind of one on synth edit called "the Krusher", that you could change the bit depth of for some really crunchy sounds. I can't really remember if it was synthesised sounds or samples though.
They gave it away with Computer Music for a while. I think if he was asked nicely he might come over here and share his sage like wisdom of all things synthy with us. And maybe a picture of his Dopfer synth!!

    Alright Boss :)

This is my little modular... Doepfer, Cwejman & Analogue Systems...

I like it a lot... my pet name for it is 'box of a thousand basses'

You can have a listen to few short sequences if you want...

Back to question... Both of those products are sequencing packages. Both are particularly suited to electronic drum programming. I'm not sure what you mean when you say they dont have the sound you want. This is usually down to the samples you pick.

The Dr. Fusion one is a good one. It's a VST that'll run inside Ableton or FL. A fun VST I like to use every so often is http://www.delamancha.co.uk/manic.htm - a probability based 8 sample drum sampler... a bit of fun.. comes with a few nice sounds... mostly electronic based.

If you were looking for more acoustic drums then these are harder to get for free. Drum loops are easy enough to find but high quality acoustic drum multi-samples are a little more difficult to find. There are free acoustic drum samples at http://www.soniccouture.com/pages/freestuff.htm - You need to use Battery or Kontakt... I guess you could download a demo and mess about. For acoustic drum programming my favourite is probably BFD it has real depth, near and distant multi-mic'd with afair 16 velocity sensitive samples per drum hit. Very realistic and tons of different kits. You get a free version with the Pro-Tools Mbox Ignition Pack... very tasty.

If it's a drum synth you're after then have a look at
    Drumatic - http://www.e-phonic.com/plugins/drumatic3.php

    or ERS Drums - http://www.bostreammail.net/ers/ersdrums.html

Both have a kind of analogue drum synth feel. Drumatic is a bit punchier and ERS is a bit more analogue sounding... both are free...

    anyways take it easy...

Cheers. Abelton and FL are fine for sounds, its some other things I'd found for drums had a set of sounds and no option for using your own samples. I was looking for a few more things to mess with, so thanks!
