No Sound on TV over HDMI and Vista - works in MCE2005

    Hi,

I have a dual boot machine with MCE 2005 and Vista. Over HDMI - MCE 2005 gives sound on the TV speakers but Vista with the same cables does not. It used to work and I suspect an auto update stopped it working.

I have since downloaded the latest nvidia and realtek drivers from Medion and no change. I have not muted anything, to my knowledge, and when playing a CD or a test sound - I can see the volume graph showing me sound but I hear nothing.

I am due the arrival of a new AV AMP any day and got my 5.1 speakers yesterday and would love to have this solved soon.

    Hope someone can help!!

    Thanks,
    majj

Obviously it's not a hardware issue if it works in MCE but not in Vista. My guess would be that the driver isn't installed properly in Vista.

Have you checked that everything is detected correctly in Device Manager? Look under Sound, video and game controllers. Try doing a scan for hardware changes and see if it detects the device correctly.

In the Realtek software check to see if the audio outputs are correctly detected. Plug out the audio cable before booting the PC into Vista. Once the desktop is loaded plug the audio cable in and the audio manager should detect the change.

You need to go to volume control down in task bar and select HDMI output, it will be dafaulted to analog output. Just do 'test device' to make sure its running ok. I don't have my vista machine handy to grab few screen shots. I had same issue when I tried using HDMI output, that resolved it for me

Hi Mylow, thanks for your message. The strange thing is , previously and much to my surprise it worked straight away when I got my TV and plugged in the hdmi. No settings needed to be changed.

I hope to be able to review the last few posts tonight and go through it.

Thanks will let you know how it goes.

    Hi Folks,

Finally cracked it. Seemed obvious when I could see the wood from the trees.

    This is how :

After unistalling and reinstalling the latest Realtek driver on medion r1.85 (again)

Within control panel -> manage audio devices

Set realtek as default. (Speakers were somehow previously set - doh!)
Goto properties -> supported formats - I set some the flags on and ran test and I got sound. I hit ok and played a cd and all ok. Went back in and all flags sound format and quality were automatically set on.

Hope that may help someone else.

Thanks to those who took the time to help.

    Here MAJJ,

how are you connecting the HDMI cable? Is it coming from your mobo or graphic card or sound card?

I have recently bought an nvidia 8800Gt which claims to have sound out the DVI port using a HDMI connector.
but I am getting no sound at all.

I've checked and I'm pretty sure it's coming from the graphics card - majj

Ok let me see if i have this correct.

    your running vista 32 bit?

you are plugging your hdmi cable into your graphic card and into a hdmi port on your TV?

your sound card is integrated onto the motherboard?

Is your VIDEO card integrated aswell or is it in a pci slot?

Does your VIDEO card have a seperate hdmi port or are you using a DVI convertor for the HDMI?

appreciate your feedback on this as this issue I have with no sound from HDMI is
    pissing me off!:)

Can you post a screen shot of your audio manager settings?

    Thanks.

    Hi,

    yep - vista 32

you are plugging your hdmi cable into your graphic card and into a hdmi port on your TV? I am pretty sure.
your sound card is integrated onto the motherboard? Yes

Is your VIDEO card integrated aswell or is it in a pci slot?
It's a Nvida 7650GS (Medion OEM) - so it has it's own slot.

Does your VIDEO card have a seperate hdmi port or are you using a DVI convertor for the HDMI? Card has a separate HDMI port.

Am connecting directly from card to tv via HDMI.

I assume you've tried what I did to resolve my issue in the above post? The sound was being sent to non-existent speakers!!

I will try to send screen shots but the steps I took have been outlined and were obvious once I went into the correct place.

I too was pissed off and very relieved once it was resolved. Also post up your screen shots it may help identify differences.

Dont worry about it Maj I got it sorted it in the end.

Today got a full refund on that 8800GT and replaced it with an "Honest" ATI card.

Yes the problem was that no speakers were appearing in the REALTEK manager or sound devices.

    Thanks for your input.
