Why arent the metro lines straight. Metro north should be from Lissenhall - Airport to Sandyford. All under ground. All sub way systems are built in a straight line

Nonsense! Have you ever seen how the London underground or Paris metro look when the lines haven't been straightened? The are straight on the map, they are no where near straight if you see an actual map of the tunnels.

Why doesnt the metro connect up with the northern line? its not far from Lissen hall.

Because we don't like sensible planning in this country.

Metro lines should be straight. The stops are too close and too Stephens Green / O Connell street orientated.

A straight line from Tallaght to east of the point would be ideal underground.

Isn't that just the Luas Red line though?

Those lines are pretty straight. The metro stops dont have to be on main streets they can be on side streets.

the LUAS was a bit of a let down, its already at capacity and doesnt meet the needs of Dublin.

Underground might be a bit expensive but its best for the city.

Logic would say that any metro system needs to connect areas of major population, commercial/retail & employment. Straight lines are a bonus!

RPA has said that as far as possible they want to tunnel under streets rarther than houses and particularly want to avoid stations under buildings. I guess this is to avoid structural damage and because they don't know so well what's under a building. That said, parts of metro north go under houses in glasnevin to great opposition from residents. Originally they were going to tunnel under trinity college but I believe this was rejected

Subway systems around the world are not straight as pointed out. They need to connect major population centres and work within the curvature limitations for the metro gauge.

For speed and capacity, it would be good to tunnel the Sandyford Luas extension or at least grade separate it but it was decided that this would cost too much. The 7km extenstion from Sandyford to Cherrywood is well underway now with bridges built etc. so it's not going to change soon.

The luas is successfully carrying 30million passengers a year and breaking even on operational costs. Yes, it's under capacity, but compared to the nothing we had, it's pretty good.

I hope you're not an architect or engineer. If you are please send me the name of your company so I can avoid getting anything designed by you.

apparently there was opposition to this in Donabate, but I agree, they should connect - it would allow commuters from Drogheda, Balbriggan etc connect through to the airport, glasnevin and other areas that will otherwise be tricky to get to.

I wouldn't waste my time arguing logic with Maskhadov, he/she is the same person that wants most of Parnell square flattened and oconnell street twisted to exactly match o'connell bridge.

    I think he's actually a comedian*. :D

Straight lines are stupid for metros. End of story. They are inflexible and force you to take a route that may not serve built up areas or may force you to needlessly tunnel through harder rock than needs be. Btw mash, they are neither horizontally nor vertially straight!

Edit: He could be a roman emgineer. If the romans had gotten here we'd have perfectly straight Undergroundus Systemii like the coloured areas in this map:

the metro will never work properly. You mark my words. Everybody nose the engines on those fancy travel metro machines will stall underground where there is no air.

But...there's no steering wheel on a train, so it has to run in a straight line to be at it's most efficent :D

Fantastic stuff! He sounds remarkably like a lot of those who welly in on public transport debates.

You know of course that you can't run Green line trams on the Red line ;)

I'm sorry I've only found this now.

The next time you tell me that MetroNorth should be Lissenhall-Airport - Sandyford I really hope you provide some more rational support for your argument beyond "all subway systems are built in a straight line". While I have some doubts about the proposed terminus of the Metro North scheme, they amount to a bit more than "it should be straight, why isn't it straight?"

I suspect this is not going to go anywhere fast and Metro North has been discussed at length...

    yeah, think I'll close it.
