so can we expect avi videos to play freely on the ps3 in the near future? Are sony developing some sort of patch? I read on the different web pages that you can stream avi's from the pc to the playstation 3 but this seem very tedious!

Is there a way of putting content onto the ps3 hdd, via ftp or copying it off the usb drive, without linux.

Seems like they should bring out a little media manager app to wrap it all up, ala xbmc.

just hook the usb key into the PS3 and it will pick it up. then press triangle and "Copy" whatever files you want and they will be moved to the PS3 HDD.

or burn it to a dvd first, then copy via the triangle > copy method

Recently bought a small 250GB external HDD for the PS3. Works brilliantly. Copied all my files over to it and plugged it in. The PS3 can play 90-95% of them.

As for streaming, TVersity is brilliant and is not tedious at all. Or just use WMP11 and share the media, The PS3 can pick it up that way.

You just got suggestions. If the AVI file won't run it's either the wrong format or you need to get the update.

AVI is just a container format. The Playstation 3 recently had supported for DivX Video format added in a firmware upgrade. So if you upgrade your PS3 you will be able to play DivX videos stored as .avi files. Other .avi files might not work (but these days .avi is almost always used for DivX files)

Just copy the files onto your flash drive, and copy them from the flash drive to your PS3, or I think you can play them from the flash drive itself, you just need to select the option to browse the flash drive under "movies"

i got the ps3 to find the flashdrive but i cant seem to find the hdd.the hdd has all sorts of data stored on it! should i be using an empty hdd to store the avi's on it?

when you hook a HDD up to the PS3 you have to go to the video section on XMB, go the the USB HDD, Click Triangle and "Display All". this will show the contents of the external HDD.

my Divx avi's are shown with huge bitrates of a few meg not what the realy are so the
ps3 only plays them for a few seconds or not at all.

It all depends what DivX or XviD codec they have been encoded with and what XviD options have been used.
DivX 3.11 files won't work as this was an illegal hacked codec format.
XviD files with GMC, QP or custom matrices won't work also as these aren't DivX certified standard encoding options.

Use TVersity to stream content, and if you want to copy files directly to the PS3, use an external FAT32 HDD or setup an Apache Web server on your PC and use the PS3's browser to Download files to the HDD

I had to create a folder named "VIDEO" on the usb key and copy the .avi file into that folder before the PS3 would find and play the file.

Just press Triangle, when usb device is highlighted, and display all, this way you can see the clips that are playable!

http://www.dvdboxoffice.com in the US about $74 for new games which inc postage any where in the world :) But if you want cheap games ebay is your man. Just make sure to buy from someone with no bad feedback & a history of selling. As of today the dollar is about $1.45 to one euro when you us visa card. Enjoy
