    Hi all,

I've heard a few people saying recently that Paddy's Day has been moved this year because it clashes with the Holy Week or something!

I've heard some people say that it's moved to the 15th, others saying the 19th and others saying don't be stupid...it's always on the 17th!!

    Anyone know fo sho??

Yeah, I remember this from months ago. Obviously St Patrick's Day the feast is and always will be March 17th, but the Parade and Skyfest and the like are on the Saturday, so March 15th.

Actually no, sorry, I'm mixed up - the *religious* aspects of the feast are moved to the 15th, everything else is as normal on the Monday.

St. Patricks day has been moved to the 15th I belive. However, Paddy's day is and always will be on the 17th.

One of the days is to do with the church and the other is to do with drinking and they are not the same thing.

Just remember that on SPD last year Ireland beat StPatrickstan in the Caribbean at rickets. It was the Aloe vera and the PABA that done it.

Just read it, anyone notice the paragraph
The Vatican approved the irregular step of moving the day backwards next year to January 20th, but details have only just emerged.

    Look people it's quite simple.

If you are Catholic and like going to Mass to celebrate the feast day of St Patrick you go to Mass on the 15th.

If you like parades, bank holidays, drinking and other festivities traditionally aligned with St Patrick's day then the 17th is the day for you.

what does this mean in regards to bank holidays?

Nothing has changed this year for anybody except for priests. Bank holidays, parades, days off work for drinking is all still happening on exactly the same day as usual. Unless you are a priest then just ignore this rubbish about the day having changed as it is not relavent to you.

The following story is entirely true and no changes were made to hide my identity, so if you can guess who I am I will buy you a hang sangwich an a cup oh tea next time im in Budlin

Many years ago on Daddy`s pay we were able to run an entire football team of a family and in 1972 we got our first sub, Bennett. He never kicked a ball but tried to kick the bucket when his mummies chalet burnt down on Howth head one fine day in 73. She spotted the fire from the village and tore up in double quick time to save our dearest nephew. As a digressionary tactic Im now going to change the subject and talk about something really important and close to my heart, yes its my aorthic valve, boom boom.

Bud, did you not hear this story last year?

Not so sure but i think it's the 19th.

No, the 19th is still in Holy Week, Paddy's Day is the 15th this year, but still have Bank Holiday on 17th, and another the following monday for easter.

Anyone wanting a nice 10 day stretch off work would be advised to book Tuesday 18th - Friday 21st (Good Friday) off work now to make the most of it!

Not going to start a religious topic but why did the church change it? It's amazing how the catholic church still controls the world! :)

Easter's the week after. Easter > St. Patrick's day in the church's eyes, so the monday before Easter > St. Patrick's day.

What's up with the 20th of January 2009 thing?

that's Bush's last day in office/inauguration of new american president. A reason to celebrate? probably. don't see what it's got to do with the vatican though

Paddy's Day is a bank holiday? Would you not have that off anyway?

No, part-timers are required to work public holidays. My Dunnes opened New Year's Day too! The other city-centre Dunnes didn't..I think because we have a supermarket/off-license.

So all boardsies should pick up their takeaways from your Dunnes, and call up to say hello and cheer you up in the process? :D

    It's definitely the 15th.

Because Easter Sunday is on the 23rd, putting Paddy's day on the 17th would put it during holy week, which apparently causes some conflict with holy week ceremonies. Or something like that.

Moving it backwards to the 19th or 20th wouldn't make any sense as you'd still have the same problem, it has to be before Palm Sunday (16th) hence the 15th.

Of course, this all applies to the church related stuff only, obviously they're not going to reorganise parades and everything else just cos the church decides putting paddy's day on the 17th would cause some kind of theological black hole which would suck in the universe.

And even if the bank holiday did move with the day (which I doubt, since it obviously a legal rather than a religious thing), it wouldn't matter anyway, since it would fall on the Saturday so you'd still get the Monday off anyway (commiserations to those who still have to work).

I'm still p1ssed off about them moving it, don't care if it doesnt affect me in any real sense, it just feels like the church is messin again.

But whatever, I really dont get this bit:
""The Vatican approved the irregular step of moving the day backwards next year to January 20th, but details have only just emerged. ""

Where is the logic that lets them move it back by two months???
    :confused::confused::confused::confused::confused:

Then again, sure its all a bunch of made up dates based on fairy tales anyway. i just wanna know when the sesions are:rolleyes:

i'm gonna bump this for anyone thats been as confused as me over the last few days.

So is everyone celebrating in our typical irish way (drinking) mainly on the saturday the 15th or are ya's waiting for the 17th as usual?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,465 ✭✭✭MOH

Well I presume everyone will do what they would have done anyway if it wasn't moved, and start drinking on Friday 14th thru Sat 15th, be wrecked by Sunday and take it easy, then go drinking again on the 17th.

That January 20th thing is a bit confusing - if you read the whole article it looks like a typo, should be "on", not "to":
In strict accordance with the rules, next year`s St Patrick`s Day should have been moved to the next available day in the Church`s calendar, which is April 1.

But senior Irish clerics were anxious to keep the date as close as possible to the international civic celebrations, which are often planned many years in advance.

The Vatican approved the irregular step of moving the day backwards next year on January 20, but details have only just emerged.

i.e. On January 20, the Vatican approved moving the day backwards next year
    Even then it's badly phrased.

I'm disapponinted in you all. Surely everyone in AH is going to be off the booze for Lent.

So come on then, explain this to and Englishman abroad, what day are the pubs closed? and what is the best day for drinking, AND watching the celebrations?

This will make you laugh, last year we had 2 Korean students staying with us. We decided to go out to Bray for the carnival. So there was 2 korean and an Englishman dressed in irish flags, hats and stuff, getting locked on the black velvet. Well ending up in the Atmospheric Bar next to the Dart drinking Vodka and red bulls!

    LOL Much merriment ensued!! :D

I don't care when St. Patrick's Day is celebrated as I have chosen a job that involves many many days off - teaching!

And also, I very very rarely drink, and I wont be on St. Patrick's Day, so to those who want to be out drinking on St. Patrick's Day but who are working I say this: Ha! :p
