Picking seats on Aer Lingus transatlantic flights

Does anyone know at what point you're allowed to do this and if you have to pay extra to do it before you arrive at the airport?

I was going to fly Continental like usual but their seating availability on the day I want to go is really bad (basically I'll end up wedged in the midde of two other people in the back row!) so I thought maybe Aer Lingus would be better but you don't appear to be able to view their seating charts like you can on continental.com?

I tried taking it through the booking stages but didn't see a sniff of a seating chart before it asked me for my credit card number...and if it's as bad as Continental I might aswell fly with them.

    Ta much :D

Whenever I flown Aer Lingus they would ask me at check-in where I like to sit, depending on what is left. Maybe if you buy your ticket from over the phone?

There's normally a seat map link during the booking process before paying anything is there not? You'll have to pay to pick a seat in advance though or pick what's left at online check in. Note that there are reports that Aer Lingus have removed the ability to pick 'premium' seats at online check in - even if they are available! Pricks.

Yeah it doesn't come up when you are booking, It's in the manage my flight section, you can do it all there. I usually change my seat several times moving away as people pick the seat beside me. Make sure though when you're checking in that they give you the right seat that you booked online.

BTW picking your seats on transatlantic flights is free as is your checked baggage. Continental is way cheaper to fly with though.

Somewhat of an aside, but... I find Seat Guru useful when deciding on where to sit on long haul, especially if the airline doesn’t have a good graphic of seat layouts

I picked my seats on a flight home from Sanfrancisco. 32C and 32A. turns out they are the disabled access seats but anyone can book them.
Anyone know if these are more roomy?

Seat selection is not charged for on transatlantic services.

You can generally pick your seat with Aer Lingus at booking. I've done it before. Perhaps it has changed though.

A few times I have just picked my seat at the Express Check-in machine in the departure hall.

I would pick AL over Continental any day. Continental are probably the worst airline that I have ever flown... They are never getting my customer again. Shoddy service, no customer service skills.... meh!
