With fat 32 ( file system read and write ) on the 20D , the max size would be 137GB , so you should be fine. 137GB is the maximum possible size for compact flash anyway.

I know of no card big enough to be rejected yet by the 20D , there probably never will be.

On a side note , with cards being so cheap , I like to split them up , I dont like having all my eggs in one basket so to speak , the fear of losing it ( either physically or through malfunction )overtakes me.

I'm the same, no idea on the limits of the 40D but I prefer to have a lot of smaller memory cards than one big one. I had a 4 gig one malfunction at the Charleville meetup and I nearly cried.

I normally use 8GB CF cards for my 20D and 40D. Looking at buying either 12GB or 16GB cards now. Maybe I'll just stick to using multiple 8GB cards.

gives me chills when I hear of anyone using cards that large. The potential loss is mind blowing.

Just curious - what DO you use? Multiple 2gb? How safe is safe? Multiple 1gb cards?

You need to check if the camera supports SDHC or just SD. If its SDHC it can deal with anything you throw at it.

If you go with a 16Gb card you may want to consider a backup solution for it. I use the Archos 605, you can get them up to 160Gb and they act as a USB host so you can plug the camera into it and transfer the files across.

I've about 24gb in 4gb cards.. all sandisk extreme 3's. Have a couple of 4gb sandisk ultra 2's and a couple of 1gb sandisk ultra 2's. There's a pattern emerging here...

It's just my personal view on it, not saying it's an absolute. I'm sure there are people using 16gb cards that have never had a problem with them and never will. It'd just make me very uneasy using a single card that big.

I know what you mean. I have 2x 8GB , 2x 4GB and 4x 2GB (all Sandisk Extreme IV cards). Normally the 8gb card is in the cameras.

Now with the 1D, I also have 3x 8GB SDHC cards, and I write raw to the CF and large jpg to the SDHC.

Thanks for all the replies. I only have 2GB X 4 at the moment but for the purpose of the hols I was thinking of buying two more 8GB so I would be covered for memory!!
I have to agree with the term having all you're eggs in one basket but I would say it is very uncommon for CF cards to corrupt (I think)

Quite uncommon for the well recognised brands (Transcend, Sandisk, Kingston, etc). It does happen for the no-name brands though, more frequently.

Since switching all my cards to Sandisk, I haven't had a problem.
