Des Kelly Interiors has recently premoted that his stores no longer trade on Sunday. Has he "seen the light". or is it just another gimic to gain new and old customers that have been opposed to sunday trading. http://www.deskellycarpets.ie/

Most likely, they worked out that opening on sundays wasn't profitable, so decided to stop doing it.

in fairness, I'd imagine that sunday would be one of the busier days. However, I don't like the shouty way he's announced it. Religion is a personal choice, and - in my opinion anyway - it's vulgar to boast about being "more" Christian than someone who may have to open on Sunday to stay afloat.

It's all a publicity stunt. He's getting a hell of a lot of free publicity from this, plus people will start thinking he's a homely type of guy, full of family values. I think it's pure genius. He's going to make a fortune out of it.

He said on the radio that Sunday was actually his busiest day.

Yes of course it is, but it is not a private one. "Going therefore, teach ye all nations" (Matthew 28.19).

    I don't think it's a gimmick.

I have met Des a few times in Romanian Pentecostal services in Dublin. A lot of Des Kelly's employees are Romanian Pentecostals who tend to have busy schedules on Sundays (their services can easily last 3 or 4 hours with several preachers). Maybe Des is being a good employer and looking after his staff?

If were to employe some Jewish people, Islamic people and Hindu people, he'd be down to a three day week.

Sunday trading is the busiest day by far, especially in Des Kelly Interiors and such like businesses. I am sure Des is genuine about closing for religious reasons, I have met the man several times from buying stuff over the years and he is an honest hardworking man, I really don't think he would close for free publicity, doesn't make sense. I have bought quite alot of stuff from Des over the years for rental properties, and when it came to our own house, Sundays were the day myself and my wife went shopping for the house as we were off together, and anytime I went to des kelly's on a sunday it would be really busy, so I'm sure he is losing alot of money so it must be religious reasons!

I remember in food shop we used to have to get paid time and a half for sundays, maybe the wages got too much for him :pac:

Good for him if this is due to religious reasons.

It is an example of how secularism should work, a private business deciding it will not open based on religious grounds rather than businesses being forced to adhere to religious standards by outside pressure groups.

Good example for everyone else me thinks.
