Hey dunno about southside but I have braces at the moment put in by a dentist in Blanchardstown. It'll cost me €4600 in total but apparently I can claim back half of that as tax. I've also heard that it's cheaper in Northern Ireland.

Same story for me.. Health board said I wasn't entitled to braces and now, at the age of 22, I have realised that the cosmetic reason for braces is as good as any! I went to Smiles clinic on South Anne street to check it out. Mine are going to cost 5700- not including the extractions I need which might be another few hundred. If you pay upfront you get 8% off and if you are in the higher tax bracket you can claim it back so it works out nearly half the price overall! (if you're in the lower tax bracket you can still claim but obviously will only get 20% back- hence, like your daughter, I am relying on a parental contribution to reap the tax benefits) You can also choose to pay just over 2000 for a deposit and then the rest over 12 months. The 5700 price tag is for the ceramic ones however, the normal metal are 5200 I think. If your daughter is going for the normal metal brackets you could probably get them cheaper elsewhere, but for ceramic or invisalign this is probably standard. Consulation is 135euro however, so I would see if you can get quotes from other places beforehand to see where gives you the best deal.

I'm paying for them myself and I'm working so I'd be able to claim them myself right?

Yep, but the amount you can get back depends on what tax bracket youre in.

I'm 28 and recently went to an Orthadontist. Metal braces will cost approx 5,500 euro and I will have to wear them for 2.5 years...
I went to smiles enquiring about veneers on top teeth got the cost etc..

The orthadontist did not recommend me getting veneers and then baces on bottom and even said he would not do braces just on the bottom as I want get the same result..

So im trying to decide what to do..
    Any advice??
    Also what are ceramic braces??

€5500 sounds like an awful lot  Maybe you should get a consultation with someone else first before you make up your mind? Shop around a bit.

Have you had braces on before?? If so where? From reading this 5k seems to be the average price...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 923 ✭✭✭Chunky Monkey

Ye I have them on at the moment. I saw a receipt the other day, they're actually €4400- big difference! Harry Kearns on River Road in Blanchardstown is doing them. I know quite a few people who had theirs done there and their teeth are beautiful now :)

Has anyone had the clear braces on? The orthadontist told me that they can snap etc and would recommend the metal ones.. However, allot of people are saying I should go with the clear braces..
Can anyone tell me who has them what they like... Do they stain?
As I drink tea and smoke!!!

    Hey there,
I've been looking into invisalign clear braces and I like the sound of them more than having metal cemented to my teeth, but that's a personal thing I suppose, and depends on the severity of your case. Both orthodontist's I've been to have recommended them and strangely, I've been quoted a shorter timeframe by both for invisalign than metal braces. I hear that they can stain-especially if you eat a lot of spicey foods etc., but you change on to a new set every fortnight so it's not like you have the same mingin' set in your mouth for a year ;-) I was quoted €4400 top and bottom in one place, and €6000 in the other by the way.

I think invisalign are different to clear braces?? I thought invisalign are like a clear retainer that you were all the time??

I have just had my braces put on! I have clear on the top and metal on the bottom. The clear is for my own vanity i suppose, i have mental on the bottom because the work much quicker so ill have them off quicker( and you cant really see my bottom teeth when i talk) They cost €5000 in total. I paid €1000 up front and then €500 every 3 months.I would reccomment my orthodontist in the Northbrook cliniv(Ranleagh) his name is Dr David Hone T: 4967111. He a lovely man, great manner and very reassuring.

Wow thats brill!!! Thats what im thinking of getting the clear ones on top and metal on the bottom? Whats the drawbacks of the clear braces?
Do you think they look better than the metal?
Yeah I dont mind the metal on bottom as wont be as visible...
Are they really sore? Ive to go back next week to sort out exactly what has to be done... Had my impressions last week... Im dreading it but kind of ok about it...

    1. My doc told me that they don't work as well and if you have really misaligned teeth (like me) then they are a waste of time (and money). I agreed with him cos I want to have braces for as short a time as possible. I'm not vain though so wearing metal doesn't bother me, maybe for girls its a big deal...?

    2. Sore the first week you get them in (can't chew) but after that not sore at all. Just awkward and uncomfortable and you can't pronouce S sounds properly.

The GD has invisalign on the top (2 months), She went and had a curry one night while drinking and stained them so she had to go back and get them cleaned! Stern words form the dentist as ortho as he had told her not to eat it!

Hers cost 5500 (i think) but again she can claim 40% back on med 2.

tbh I dont really notice the invisalign that much (then again I am probably use to them) but she likes them and is more confident with them.

hi i have been to Dr.Hoey in lucan today, i am getting braces top and bottem total cost 4,000. you pay 200 or 300 every visit which is every 6 to 8 weeks and you can clain around 800 back, im 21 and i do need them i think this is a very good price as my friend paid 3,000 for braces only on her top teeth! i have a friend that went to dr.hoey and she has lovely teeth now. i will have my braces on by the start of december that only 8 weeks from my first visit, i have to get two teeth out :( that will be the worst part.

Clear braces arent as good as train tracks they dont work as well or as fast

Guys, all the brackets do is stick to the teeth. The ligatures (elastic bands) grip the wire and the bracket and let the wire pull on your teeth. This works the EXACT same way for metal and clear/ceramic brackets.

Clear brackets aren't 'slower', 'not as good' or 'don't work as well'. All they do is sit on your teeth, ceramic is as strong as metal so they work just as well.

Disadvantages are that they are bigger and can be more prone to popping off your teeth as there is less give in them than in metal brackets. Some orthos don't like using them as they are so used to metal ones and they can lead to more visits to get brakcets reglued.

I have just been given an appointment with the Dentist in Blanch, my dentist recommended him for me. I have been on at my dentist for years about getting braces, he finally gave in!
Only thing is, I have a medical card. I know that I pay for my braces but do I pay for my visits and stuff or are they covered? I forgot to ask!

Also, I only need braces on the top and he said I'd only need them for about 6 - 9 months which Im delighted with!

Wow...I'm working out in Beijing at the moment and I got them on last week..top and bottom..the dentist is charging me 1,300 euro. I considered this expensive but Ireland yet again doesn't surprise me.

An English lad from the office traveled to Bangkok at the weekend and got his teeth whitened, 2 molar root canals and 3 filings for the equivalent of 500euro:eek:

Your medical card doesnt cover it sorry , i have mine on a year top and bottom and its costing me 4,000 . i still have 2,000 to pay before i get them off :(

Greetings all. Recently got a quote of 3000 and guaranteed results after only 6 months. Basically, the dentist concentrates only on the front 6 upper teeth. Braces only for 6 months.

Any thoughts on this? I like the idea of it being short and sweet. But is it possible really to get that good results after only 6 months?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,939 ✭✭✭ballsymchugh

they're 6 month braces, it's a trade name. and as you said, they only concentrate on the front teeth. there are other threads dealing with this. my problem with them is (and dub02 pay attention!!) the time it takes for them to straighten is 1/4 to 1/3 the time it takes to get the whole lot done, but the price is the same. you're paying for marketing.
if you went to an orthodontist, you'd get everything sorted and stabilised, not just the front 6 teeth. it's something you, and everyone else, should bear in mind.
by the way dub02, for that price, you can get a grand holiday in north korea from beijing. i'd give it a shot if i were you!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 209 ✭✭lil_tuts

if they only concentrate on the front 6 you could be left with gaps at the back i personally wouldnt even consider it , why pay 3 grand to fix 6 teeth when u can pay 3 -4 grand and fix them all . . the time flys by you forget you have them on after the first month or two.

that's what i MEANT to say!!

Cheers guys for the clarification. It's something I will have to think about. I don't fancy having gaps in my teeth where the braces haven't been fitted.

you might not have gaps just ask about it, but i can't see how you wouldnt if they are only doing the front 6 but all in all for the extra few hundred i would get the lot done, i didnt need them on the bottom my teeth were straight enough but my bite had to be fixed seen as i was moving the top so alot of times your better getting both done for this reason. i go to dr.hoey in lucan who i would recommend. shop around :-) you wont know anyway till you go in and have a chat with them. maybe get your xrays done and see what they recommend. good luck
