    hi lads,

friends of mine got married last year in January. he is a factory worker, she has a child which is now 2 and there's second one on the way.
once they got married they supplied the papers to the local tax office.
the question is - should they get to be treated as couple (and got bigger tax allowance) if only one of them is working?

    thanks
    marc

No they can't. But the working parent can claim home carer's tax credit.

For 2007 a one income couple will get a tax band of 43,000 as opposed to 34,000 for a single person. That is the benefit in a nutshell. This presume she is not working. If that is the case she can also apply for a home carer's credit. If that is not the case, a two income couple can have a tax band of up to 68,000 (assuming the spouse has income of up to 25,000.
