I was offered a Mossberg-- Maverick 88, 5 shot pump action shotgun today. They are looking for €300. He said it only had about 200 shots through it and feels so good and its clean and with a smooth action.
    Is this a good deal??

5 shot may be illegal ? 2 in mag and 1 in chamber is all that's allowed ?

Only for hunting. Clays etc. allow as many as you want. If you go for it (and it sounds a very good deal) just install the plug for hunting that limits the mag capacity to two.

As an aside, isn't the maverick 88 a security gun? As in has a permanent cylinder choke (no good for hunting)?

Thats Ok it has a wooden insert/reducer to keep it to a 3 shot.

AFAIK 3 cartridges is limit, not just for hunting ? Anyone clarify ?

Which is very easy to remove ;) Don't think they are too expensive new, heard €400 ?

I was already talking to the FO here tonight and she didn't say anything when I said it was a 5 shot pump action shotgun. Just told me to get all the details in asap. :)

As far as I am aware, and don't stand infront of a judge and quote me on it :D, five shots would be illegal for the likes of duck and other game shooting but legal for vermin/fox and clay shooting.

Standing by to be corrected, but I don't think I will be for once :D

Not being funny but a lot of them don't know much about firearms legislation:rolleyes:

I know am a newbie but I was told limit for hunting game(ducks, etc.) is 3, including chamber and everything above is legal(clays, targets, vermin(foxes, bunnies, etc)). As to it being a good deal, tbh couldnt tell ya.

Don't quote me on it but I thought the 3 rounds rule applied to semi-auto. A pump would be very much like bolt-action. Unless you manually reload i.e. pump you can only fire one shot. I saw the same gun new in a shop for a stiff 400 euro so if it's in genuine pristine condition you're making a decent saving.

    Good point

meathstevie is correct on the pump and semi being different, but the difference may not extend to usage.

    A 5 shot semi is Cat B, a fixed 3 shot is cat C
All pump action shotguns are cat C, (exception is those below 60cms)

Although the restriction on semi-autos for shooting may not distinguish between pumps and semis

As soon as I put the gun up to my shoulder I had to have it. Its a good clean gun. Fits nicely to the cheek/shoulder and just feels and sits good.
Done deal at €250. Just back from the Garda station now (11.30pm) I was with the FO and filled out all the forms added a short covering letter and now sit back and wait. FO said 6 to 8 weeks but hopefully only 4 weeks.

Its been a long time since my last shotgun (36 years) so I'll have to start out with a good few clay's first.
It's good to be back. Cordite and testosterone what a mix ;);)

lads, he asked if it was a good deal, not for a whole page about magazine capacity. :p

anyway €250 is good value for one nearly new, the 88 is like a more basic version of the 500, cheaper to make cause they use mostly foreign parts as opposed to most other mossbergs, and doesnt have a stainless reciever i think (?) ive a had my 500 for about 8 years and its still good as new.

im assuming you got the field version? vent rib?

Yes 28" field version with vented rib. Just have to wait now for the licence, but first off to bed, it was a long day. I'm on the go about this gun since 6 this evening but it was worth it now. Thanks to all who replied.

I had a Mossberg pump 7 shot, it was a pleasure to shoot, no pumping problems and never had any jams/misfires etc. €300 sounds good. I paid €450 for mine (new). Advice: Stick a pencil in the magazine area to limit it to a 3 shot and declare it as a 3 shot.

A pencil??? Handy to tally count at end of day I suppose
Any way, unless is restricted permanantly, it doesn't matter.

Congratulations Clive, good deal. Forget the clays and practice on crows and magpies. Cheaper and usefull:)

In relation to magazine capacity permitted the Wildlife Act 1976, Section 33, states:

33.—(1) It shall be an offence for a person to kill or injure—

( a ) with a repeating or automatic shotgun (other than a repeating or automatic shotgun which is adapted or modified so as to render it incapable of carrying more than three shotgun cartridges), with an airgun, air-rifle, gas-rifle, pistol or revolver, or with any firearm fitted with a silencer device, any wild bird,
( b ) with a rifle, any protected wild bird.

It does not state that the bird is a protected bird or a game bird ( as it does when discussing rifles) therefore any wild bird could be crow, pigeon, magpie, jackdaw, rook, (vermin) etc.

Pump action & semi-auto are covered as repeaters - it doesn't mention a limit for shooting mammals not protected - grey squirrel, fox, rabbit, rodents etc.
