Yeah, used them all over the world no problems, you usually have to pay 10% up front an the balance at hostels, print out the page confirming your registration which shows you have paid the 10% otherwise it's a hassle at hostels as they don't usually know what's going on.

+1, always use hostelworld. Well actually we look up hostel world for the descriptions of the hostels (because there fairly deen) then use another site, www.hostelbookers.com to actually book the hostel. The reason we do this is hostelworld charge a service charge and hostelbookers don't. It's only a euro or two but if you're travelling for a while it saves you a decent amount.

I've used hostelworld and hostelmania before, I just saw something cheaper on hostelz and wanted some feedback on it.

    Thanks

I've booked a fair few places with Hostelworld and have never been charged a service charge. It's an Irish company afaik and they gave me free gold membership because I was Irish (at least that's what they told me!).

Yeh it seems to be an Irish company or one of the main guys is Irish because when i signed up I had a " Travel Buddy" who was some Irish guy who on his profile says he is the editor of Hostelworld.com,haven't a clue who he is though.

On the service charge issue,i booked a hostel/hotel in Milan and was charged €1.50 service charge.

    10th Mar '08 2 Bed, Private Room (Shared Bathroom) €32.50 2 €65.00
    11th Mar '08 2 Bed, Private Room (Shared Bathroom) €32.50 2 €65.00
    Total: €130.00
10% Deposit (€13.00) will be billed in EUR:
    Service Charge: €1.50

AFAIK the 10% deposit goes to hostelworld and the service charge goes towards the handling of the credit card payment. If you have any problems with the booking you will not be getting either of these back. Personally, I have found you can save a fortune by going directly to the hotel themselves to make the booking. Assuming it is not a peak travel period, you would be surprised how willing they are to work with you if you call them and ask if they have any discounts if you book more than 3 days with them. Skype is a very cheap way to do this. More times than not, I have been able to get the bookings for about 10-15% less than quoted on hostelworld.
