    Hey,

Sorry for double post mods, just thought i would get more feedback if i put this in the work / education boards.

I have been working in IT for a number of years. I want to change direction a little and I am extremely interested in Ecommerce as a career. I am more interested in the business end of this rather than doing the actual development.

I have been looking at the M.sc in Electric Commerce (Business) in DCU and also the Msc / MBS in ecommerce at smurfit.

Anyone got reports on either of these two courses. I would prefer to do a M.sc but may have to opt for the MBS as you can do that part-time. I am trying to work out if I can afford to go back fulltime to do the M.sc.

    Any help welcome,
    thanks

Can you not do the MSc part time in Smurfit? I think a MSc is more recognised than the MBS but if you do go back to school full time i reckon you should be eligible for some funds not sure which though

All the best! And keep is posted!

    Hi,

I did a MS.c in E-commerce in DCU I found it really good, but fairly though going at times if your not from an IT background.
I checked out similar courses elsewhere and didnt like the look of them. Also, A MSc in E-commerce at DCU is subsidised by the EU so it is really cheap (less than €2000 for a 12 month full time course).

They try and promote enterprise in DCU so you can work on projects with a view to developing them further as a possible future business.

I would recommend it, but don't expect a MS.c in anything to come easy so the part time job may have to go on hold for a while.

    Hi bibbly,

Thanks for the input. I have been working in I.T for 5 years now. I am stuck in a rut and despise what I do. I am extremely interested in ecommerce as an area and the main focus of my interest would be on the business end. I don't think I would have many issues on the technical side of things.

I am trying to find out if this qualification will open up job opportunities for me in the area of ecommerce.

If you have completed the course, are you now working in this area or an area related to your Msc.

    Thanks

I am not currently working in an e-commerce job as such, Although I did try to get into it.

I found most jobs required an in-depth knowledge of computer programming, which i didn't have. But I do think that the qualification helped with my job prospects, and have landed a job which i enjoy which is still quite technical but not too boring.

With your previous all your job experience together with a MS.c in E-commerce you should become quite attractive for employers.

However, if you already have a good knowledge of I.T perhaps you not rule out doing a pure business related masters? This way the business qualification would add to your existing skills set and have the same effect in terms of finding a job in e-commerce.

Remember most e-commerce done in Ireland is by small companies with a handful of staff. So it can be hard to find good jobs in this area. I think the whole e-commerce area is underdeveloped in Ireland, and what i would love to do is jack in my job and start something up myself, but with a taste for a steady income, i might not pluck up the courage anytime soon.

Any Masters is worth doing in my view, its a small amount of time out of your life, and your qualification will always stand to you.

    best of luck.

    Hi,

I am currently doing the Msc in ecommerce in dcu just finished semester 1. I am coming straight out of my degree (information technology & business degree), my degree was a hybrid of IT and business. I felt the ecommerce course would really stand to me.

I had an internship in IBM for 4 months and 1/3 of people in the business unit I worked in had a masters degree and I was pointed in the direction of the ecommerce masters by my manager at the time, he felt it would give me an edge in the business intelligence field.

I also spent the summer just gone working on an Enterprise Ireland project, basically trying to make a technical project work, commercialising it in essence (this is what truely reinforced my decision to do the course).

After tasting the ecommerce course for 1 semester I am really enjoying it and find the mix of business and IT very complementary they seemed to have struck a nice balance thus fare on the course. DCU try and promote enterprise similiar to my previous college. The idea of working on the lastest innovations is what really appeals to me.

But let it be said there is alot of work!! things really pick up the pace quickly.

    Hey,

Sounds great, I am going to probably do that. I have two ideas at the moment and I hope to work on them during the year.
One more question is the course designed solely at those who want to do web development. I am more interested in the business end of Ecommerce ( I have a lot of php experience but am not too interested in doing it ).

    Cheers

I won't say that its all web development, alot of the material is of a conceptual nature. You get to study alot of ecommerce/enterprise system implementations which is very interesting. But webdesign so to speak is just another compenent with the focus not specficially placed on it from what i have seen so far in semester 1.

Hi all , im interesting in doing Masters in E commerce . However I'm not sure which would suit me better technical or business stream. Im now currently 4th year student of Technology Management . This courses includes half business and half technical modules, maybe it has more business edge.
