    Thanks for that Sinnerboy.
Glanced over it, seems to be recommending what mosts posters here would want to do anyway.
I found 'Diagram 1' a bit confusing. Will have to read up on that.
Homebond are doing 'Right on the Site' meetings around the country explaining Doc. L as well as other things.

just spotted a slight error in Diagram 1,
The roof U-Value arrow shouldn't be connected into the window and door box

A few well hidden reversals from their consultation doc.
They'd suggested bring the values of the notional (reference doc) back to 0.24 - dropped.
notional build area for wall elements - new formula introduced - dropped - same as actual build

The boys in the DOE must have been put under some pressure from the Greens!

Air testing compulsory, inspection and quality systems for thermal bridging necessary.

Biggie - any body wanting to put under floor heating in - min 0.15 U-value!!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,433 ✭✭✭sinnerboy

    also
    - roof u values revised from draft - was to .022 in all cases - now as per 2005
    - min qty of low energy lighting - stripped out
    - section added for existing dwellings
    - 25% area for windows - rerquires u value of 2.0 ( was 2.2 )
    - boilers min effeiceiency 86%

( don't mean to mod here but ) may I ask for folks to highlight other items

Take the horse to the water and all that jazz ;)

Its down to people to voluntarily post their comments - we cant make them but point taken though. The more the merrier.

i'm not happy about the lighting at all. It make no sense consider Gormley is pushing for a ban on incandescents

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,433 ✭✭✭sinnerboy

EU forced it . Considered we were "closing our market" to other EU producers who make lamps . Go figure .

I don't like the look of 0.15 for underfloor heating. What would be involved in attaining that value ? 2 x 50mm insulation in standard construction will bring us to 0.2 right ?

    b.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,902 ✭✭✭✭Mellor

well it makes sense, heating the slab results in more heat leaving through the floor

    b.

Depends on the size of the floor Perimeter length/Area - it'll take 125mm of polyiso approx.

Yeah, 100mm of Kooltherm would get you within the regulation for UFH if the Perim/Area is less than 0.4...

For a perim / area ratio of 0.75 what would I need ?

... and how are you calculating that ?

    b.

Yes LESS than 0.4 - at 0.4 the Kooltherm at 0.021 Lambda will achieve 0.16.

Why would you use Kooltherm - is it not a fire board?

    b.

    130mm Xtratherm or Kingspan Polyiso

Calculation is the length of the exposed perimeter divided by the area.

The value of the floor uninsulated is then calculated (Using a ground value of 2 - 1.5 in North) then insulated added.

The Xtratherm web site has a calculator for doing it, or you can buy one from the BRE website.

When do these reg's take affect i.e. anything granted planning after what date? or is it anything that commences afetr such a date?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,902 ✭✭✭✭Mellor

Regarding the floor U-value and UFH.
You may have to be a little above or below 0.15.
there should be a new document published oh heating systems soon, it will be covered in that

    Application
    3. (1) These Regulations shall apply to the provision of a new dwelling
(including a flat), where works commence or take place, as the case may be, on
or after the 1st day of July 2008 except where—

    (a) a planning application is made on or before the 30th day of June 2008
for planning permission or approval pursuant to the Planning and
Development Act 2000 (No. 30 of 2000) and where substantial work
has been completed by the 30th day of June 2009
    .

    (b) a notice pursuant to the provisions of Part 8 of the Planning and
Development Regulations 2001 (S.I. No. 600 of 2001) has been published
on or before the 30th day of June 2008 and where substantial
work has been completed by the 30th day of June 2009.

    (2) Regulations L2(e) and L3 shall apply to the installation of oil and gas
fired boilers after the 31st day of March 2008.

    (3) For the purposes of these Regulations, “substantial work has been completed”
means that the structure of the external walls of the dwelling has been
erected. “DEAP” means the relevant version of the Dwelling Energy Assessment
Procedure published by Sustainable Energy Ireland.

If you got planing last year you have until "the 30th day of June 2009" for substantial work.
The older TGDs are available http://www.environ.ie/en/TGD/

commonities.gov refers to their version of TGD L,
which refers to est.gov.org, which is down at the minute

Found this link which points, on the right hand side, to what I was after, as well as other useful stuff.

<Be aware that for the republic links, they are still at 2002 regs!>

The U value calculator looks mighty, albeit using UK values.
