Summer rugby?

I'm just coming to the end of my first year of playing rugby and I'm itching for more, what opportunities are there to keep playing over the summer? The last fixture of the J4 season is in March, surely we're not expected to go off and get fat until autumn?
Is there any Sevens in Ireland? I've come across the Kinsale Sevens competition, but how does one go about finding a club that plays week in week out?

Ask the lads on your team, maybe some of them play tag, or sevens during the summer.

There's also the Navan High Kings Tens tournament near the end of the summer/early autumn it might be something you could work towards.

    Try organise friendlies yourself etc.

    Play some tag?

As far as full contact goes i dont think there is much around during the summer.

Tag rugby is meant to be fun for training and socially as well. Im thinking of giving it a go myself this summer.

Check the link below from the IRFU site. They will be taking registrations soons for summer league.

I'll ask the lads, I definitely need the practice! Rugby's quite a technical game, it's taken me longer to get around the nuances of it than I was expecting; it's hard to get good without match practice, and it's hard to get in the team without getting better..

The league ends in march, the cup begins :) , also if you want more punishment then get your club to enter a team into the j5 cup.

Aye, was surprised that J4 league would end by March, even in the women's competition we've games 'til the beginning of May at least. I've no free weekends between now and then anyway :(

J5 you say? If I'd have known there was something lower than J4, I'd have started there! :-)
Is it a lower standard? Or is it simply a different competition?
Who plays? We've a squad of 35, most of whom don't get more than a few minutes a month game-time, I'm sure I could pull together 15-20 lads to play.

Funny, looking at the pictures of the tag on the irfu website and there's one picture with at least 4 of our team in it, chances are someone knows what the score is.

What team do you play for that has 35 players for one team !?!!
Its basically J4 players a few older lads who dont wanna play golden oldies yet, its only a cup at the end of the season, theres no J5 league, just J5 Cup. its a bit of craic, lost in first round last season /sigh, doing well in J4 this season though, top of are group and unbeaten ! :)

Tag is ok for a bit of fun and an alternative fitness workout but won't do much for technical skills. You should simply accept the summer layoff and use it as an opportunity to get yourself into a good fitness and strength program. Identify your weaknesses and work on them (e.g speed, strength, size).

Can I suggest a spot of Rugby League? It will do lots for your defence and ball carrying, plus help maintain a level of fitness. It's also a lot of fun to play - despite what you'd think from some of the matches you see on the TV - and you're guaranteed to get the ball a good few times in a match.

Because the two codes don't compete for players, there isn't the same animosity that exists in other countries (apart from a few idiots). Most the players are normally union players, and generally a good few of the players on any team will be new to league.

Check out www.rli.ie for a list of clubs.

Aye, never thought of that actually. There's a rugby league forum here on boards, might be an idea to check out their links thread and/or contact one or two of the lads who post there.
