    Guys,
Customs have my package now since 10th Jan, package cost is about 100 euro and came from China.

But they still have it, any ideas how long they are going to keep it and can I contact them, I rang SDS about it, who handed it over, and she said "they are a law onto themselves"

Ordered DVDs from Amazon.com on 6 January. Dispatched 7 January.
On 15 January got letter from Customs dated 14 January saying that they had the package and wanted €27 for VAT and import duty.
Posted them a cheque that day and had the box on 17 January.

First time caught in over 300 orders from Amazon.com

I ordered some Blu-ray discs from Amazon.com over Christmas. They were sent around the 2nd of Jan and I got them last Thursday, together with a bill for VAT which I had to pay to the Postman. Looking at the details on the parcel, Customs received it on Jan 10th, then released it to An Post on the 23rd for delivery to me. Almost 2 weeks just to calculate 21% of 70.

What really gets me though is Amazon had a buy one get one free on the Blu-ray discs. So I paid $70 in total, including the postage, but the value declared was $110, they included the actual value of the free DVDs on the declaration. Doesn't make that much of a difference to the VAT bill, but still.

Exactly the same thing happened to me, if you get them gift wrapped I think you can get around paying VAT. But can anyone confirm this?

Gifts up to €45 including postage are exempt. It is illegal to falsely label a nongift as a gift.

They are a law unto themselves as said, keep it weeks, then charge you handling fees for the privelege.

I see, thanks for that it's worth bearing in mind :)

Import duty is charged on the value of the goods or price payable, thats why you were charged on the higher value
