I remember reading this article last week and thinking to myself "Don't Braun make electric razors?" :p

well at least he had inspiration....unlike most PC manufacturers, who seem to have forgotten the concept of aesthetically pleasing design.

Well if you allow for the time difference then,

portable music device (radio) = portable music device (ipod)

    It's amusing little comparison.

My one complaint with industrial design is that it needs more curves.

Obviously, I've missed the whole point :p

Good Industrial Design (ID) is timeless, and the similarity of the two company's products shows that they are both designed using sound (and similar) principles.

The level of similarity does show that Ive was directly influenced by Rams' work (it's hard not to be, as almost every ID student gets shown it, as I did when I studied for my ID degree).

However, it doesn't matter about the closeness of the designs, once the newer ones (Apple's) are still quality designs in their own right and not poor derivative versions.

Anyway, it is entirely possible that someone who had never seen the Braun/Rams stuff could, while designing to the same principles, come up with the Apple stuff, as they are both timeless and pleasing to most viewers' eyes (although I wouldn't believe Ive if he said that he'd never heard of Rams!)

I'm an industrial design student and a few of my friends have shown me this.

To be honest most of Ive's modernist inspired stuff leaves me cold, and I'm no fan of him, but I think the "OMFG ripoff!!!1" attitude is unjustified.

There are some striking similarities, but this isn't plagiarism. Successful design inevitably inspires other designs.
