New guitar time

To copy a thread by rhcp, im also currently in the market for a new guitar. Ive had my ltd viper 400 for roughly 4 years and although its never led me astray i feel i want to move on to even greener pastures.

My budget is around €1000, or about $1500(due to the "sale" on u.s. instruments at the moment :D) and im probrably going to go down the second hand route.

I was eyeing up a nice prs on chrisguitars.com but unfortunatly someone nabbed it before i got my funds together. Im in two minds about my next guitar, on one side id murder a prs. Iv played a few and every single one of them blew my mind for there versitility and sheer exellence. On the other hand iv really gotten a taste for 7 stringers recently. Id also kill for a guitar with piezos.

Been kinda thinking of maybe a parker, a prs or some form of ibanez or the stephen carpenter ltd's.

Basicly im looking for your opinions on this one, and sites that sell second hand gear. I know chrisguitars and ebay but what else is out there?

I play guitar in a cover band so versitility would be nice but not really essential as i have another 2 guitars that would do fine but still itd nice to have. Anyway what do you recon? what is the guitar for me?

Hmm, I think there's only one clear answer here: Petrucci.

Versatile as hell, extremely good guitar, can come with piezos, or in 7 string if you want, so why not go for it all? There's no other production 7 on the market that has piezos. I've played quite a few PRS's, and honestly, the Petrucci is a superior guitar.

Only thing, I don't know if you'll find one for €1000.

For another second hand place, I recommend: http://www.ishibashi.co.jp/u_box/

+1. If you spot something on Ebay - lurk around the patrickeggleguitars.org (unofficial) forum - you can often get an extra bit of insight into what you're looking at. Definitely consider the early 90s (92-94 models). The only issue you may have is that the older Berlin Plus/Pros etc are in high demand - so they end up being pretty expensive. The other models tend to have more varying demand so you can get quite the bargin from time to time. A beautiful green burst LA went for £300 last week. I picked up a 92 NY standard last year for €400 which would be an average price for that model bit I love it to bits - its a lovely guitar really suits me - but depending on your tastes - your mileage may vary.

    D.

Not a huge fan of bolt-on PRS's personally.

Very poor flame-tops for the money (you'd find better on a cheap Korean guitar), massive neck heel, crude and old-fashioned neck joint.....bleh, just a very average guitar IMO.

If you want to buy a bolt-on guitar with mahogany boldy, maple top, humbuckers and a trem, there's much better guitars out there.

Yea hungus i would deffinatly kill for a petrucci, it was my first thought untill i realised wait this is an ernie ball its gonna cost through the nose. Especially a 7 with piezos.

Eggle arent really my bag to look at(yea i know like a prs but not as nice) how do they sound is the question?

I was eyeing up that mccarthy alright not a great finish but for my budget im not gonna be THAT pickie.

Hungus are you serious that there is no other production 7 ever? Could get lucky and find somthing that they stopped making?

Not with piezos, no. There was an Ibanez RG2027, but they're extremely rare and collectable, with very good reason too, considering you won't find another guitar with a piezo'd up double locking trem. So, that and the Petrucci were it.

If you find a second hand Petrucci, it's not so bad price wise.

Ahh, im not a fan of the double locking trems, too much hastle and prob cost a lot.I think i know the one your talking abou i think. Wes boreland played rm before yea?

1500 is the cheapst i can find one, worth it i know but still argh........money :(:(:(

Yeah, you're right about Borland playing one. ;)

They wouldn't cost a lot, under a grand anyway, they're just rare as feck, and chances are someone else'll snap it up faster than you can say boo. So not too expensive, but extremely hard to get.

Keep looking around, you can definitely get a Petrucci 7 with piezos for considerably less than 1500. I know. ;)
