Biomedical Engineering

Hey,

I am very interested in doing the Biomedical Engineering course in Galway next year. I was considering Biomedical Science over it but I think Biomedical Engineering holds more interest for me as I do physics and technical drawing.

Could anyone tell me about the course in the university?

I like the designing aspect with CAD and other aspects such as coming up with new ideas and improvements on current medical devices.

I dont like the idea of being in a lab most of the day which is what Biomedical science probably involves. But I know there is probably alot of interesting things in that course also.

Want to get a bit of info on the university too, looks pretty cool from what I've seen.

Any info would be great.

Hey my advice as a Biomedical Engineering student is to decide whether you are interested in science or engineering. I was like you, really undecided. Biomeducal engineering is for the 1st 3 years exactly like Mechaincal engineering, we be in the same classes. Besides the Mechanical engineering we also have to study Biology on top. Its only final year that we have different classes etc. the difference being Biomeds have a **** lot to do. The real pain at the end of this is that while Biomeds are restricted to Biomedical companies e.g. Abbot, Boston Scientific. Mechanicals are not. In the long run companies want Mechanical Engineers, not Biomeds. Thats an actual fact. Most mechanicals end up in biomed companies. So my advice to either do Biomedical science or Mechanical engineering. Another thing you should know, whether you do mechanical or Biomed, get used to doing 12 hour days. 1st year your be in college 9am to 10 pm for 2 days a week.
