Schol Information Talk 28/01/08

    Hi there everybody,

Yup, tis that time of year again.... 'Schols' are upon us. I know that there a lots of people on this board who are either a) Going for Schols or b) Know people who are going for Schols. So I figured I'd pop along here with a notice...

Schols can be a confusing and pressurised experience. So, the SU want to make it a little bit easier. So, there's going to be a Schol Information Talk with David Hughes, the Secretary to the Scholars. He's going to be giving a presentation about the whole process and aiming to de-mystify it and make it that bit more manageable for everyone thinking of doing it. There'll also be current Scholars there and we'll be having a Q&A Session (nothing like a good session) so you can find out everything you want/need to know about Schol. The talk is on Monday 28th January 7 p.m. Ed Burke Theatre, Arts Building.

Do come along! It'll be ever so spiffing!

Also, for those wanting to do Schol, the Application Deadline is Friday 1st February. Get your Schol skates on!

    Peace, Love & Toasters,
Bartley 'Not Taking the Educat Moniker' Rock

You'd be surprised. The talk is a great way to get everything about Schol made definite. Even if it's just as peace of mind, it can make the whole thing easier. Come along and ask some questions. You'd be amazed what you'll learn....

Damnit! I'm not sure I can attend. Will there be anyone taking 'official' notes and if so, is there any way I could get ahold of them?

Schols sounds like a great idea. I'm definitely going to go to this.*

*Anyone who doesn't laugh uproariously at this obviously doesn't know me.

I guess what I'd want to know would be along the lines of...

........how the exam answers should be structured. (although I suspect you get most of this from the lectures/your lecturer)
........when will the results come out (i.e, will we know about our exemptions, should we get them, before Trinity Monday? Or do we need to study all the way through trinity term before finding out that we don't actually need to sit the summer exams?)
.......when will the exam timetable come out?
......who will be marking the papers?
.......will the student union be providing those cute stress pigs to those taking the exams? :)

That's up to the individual department/school/office/unit/spaceship - you'll need to check that, sorry :(
.......when will the exam timetable come out?

Towards the end of the term; the closing date for applications is Friday so it's usually soon enough after that (once they have identified the numbers and combinations.
......who will be marking the papers?

Whoever sets them - usually the lecturer responsible for the particular course, or (for papers that draw from more than one course) a combination of lecturers in the relevant department/school/spaceship. Overall results approved by the same 'court of examiners' (i.e. meeting of lecturers) (usually at school level although may differ for multi-school/multi-faculty) that would deal with annual results.
.......will the student union be providing those cute stress pigs to those taking the exams?

    Paging Dr. Bartley...

I've recently given up on doing schols, but I would just like to clarify one thing...

Are the exemptions from the summer exams given out on an individual exam basis, or do you just get an exemption from all your exams if you get an overall II.1? Or does it depend on the department/course?

The reason I ask is because I had assumed you could do schols in 2/3 subjects, get II.1s in them, then just sit the other 2/3 exams in the summer - break up the year that way. I asked one of my lecturers this question and he said no, you have to get an overall II.1 in all the exams, so now I'm not bothering with them at all. I'd just like to clarify that he was correct - no reason to doubt him really - but I'd hate to be mistaken on this...

It depends on the course and faculty. Some course, *cough* BESS, take the easier option of partial exemptions which frees people up for summer exams, other courses require a 2.1 overall with all the usual t&c's, and still others (I think) will only give exemptions in the subjects taken, for example in Science where only 2 of 3 subjects are taken for Schols. I'm sure Mr Rock will be along any second to correct me where I'm wrong, but that's a general overview of the system.

Not any more, as far as I know - last year were the last ones to benefit from that (and only 2/3 people got partials anyway - most got full or none). In fact, last year would have been the first year of the all-or-nothing approach had people not kicked up hell.

So........any useful info from today's talk? Are there going to be any changes to the schols system this year or is it the same as ever?

Right, thanks. I guess I'll just assume my lecturer was correct then and drink my Easter away rather than bothering with any silly exams. The system works!
