No, it`s not hard to get a visa for Oz. My `interview` consisted of them clarifying my name, age etc. and saying `okey doke that`s that done`.

I know a lot of people who`ve gone to both countries for a year, both sound pretty much the same. If you want something different, look at non English speaking countries. Much less Irish people there! ;)

I've never been to Australia but i have mates over there almost a year now and from keeping in contact with them they tell me it might as well be Ireland over there. While they do meet Australians they tend to find themselves with Irish people the most.

I lived in America for 4 years. And San Diego of all places, a place that thousands of Irish flock to every summer. While i did notice a difference in the numbers of Irish compared with the rest of the year. It was never an overbearing amount. granted i may have been more welcoming as i was actually living there long term.

It seems Australia is worse for the Irish all year around where America will be only during the summer J1 months. So if i had a choice i'd pick America. mainly because i have access to canada and central america. but getting a year long visa to the states is a really difficult thing. i went to college there so that's how i got mine.

also America isn't rubbish, it's just different to what you are used to. i noticed a big difference in the nightlife and lack of drink culture.

have lived in both for at least a year in each place and would choose australia over the states every single time. just think the lifestyle is better and i prefer the aussie people. worked in the finance area in both areas and found the yanks to be very pc, you really had to watch what you said where as my current job in sydney is a great laugh.
think it is probably easier to get into oz too i'd think.

I've lived in both too and while I had a great time in Chicago and that I'd still pick Perth hands down, hence my decision not to go home after a year!

As for the whole Irish thing, they're everywhere. Pretty much all the hotspots are as bad as each other so I wouldn't let that influence the decision. You'll meet them anywhere you go

im afraid id have to disagree when your abroad .theres nothing worse than paddies on tour...we are slowly but surely gaining similar reputation to our counterparts on the other side the channel

well it depends where in the states. I was in San Diego for 4 years and found it to be one of the most chill cities i ever been in. Although i spent a lot of time in Mexico and central America while there. The ease of access to those regions is the only reason why i'd pick the states over Australia. But you're right about having to watch your tongue around some yanks in certain parts. I couldn't go into politics and they don't get sarcasm.

I have only ever been on hols in the states but my bf lived in san fran for 3 years. We both went to oz and he would pick oz every time. We stayed in most of the big cities there and yes we did mix with other irish but most of our friends were from oz and we still keep in contact. There is so much more to oz than the pub. My advice would be to try and stay away from paddys on tour or you could end up spending most of your time in one city and then theres a mad dash on the last month or 2 to see as much as possible and it isn't possible.
I would recommend Oz plus its away easier to get a visa.

totally agree with the paddies on tour comment. think its your own fault if you fall into that trap, all it takes is to avoid the oirish pubs and meet locals to really experience the place. haven't set my foot inside the cock'n'bull or scruffy murphys since i've been in sydney, people who i know who've been here did nothing else in their spare time but drink in those kind of places.
