Hi. After seeing this thread i would like to get hungarian channels at home for my girlfriend. At the moment we do not have any tv at all and i would love to get the Hungarian package as well as the free to air uk channels.
I am confused as to what these packages consist of. For instance does upc package on astra 1 use a different card to a similar package on hotbird?
If so where do i get these cards?
I clearly do not have a clue, as you can see. A lot of the sites i am reading are very confusing so i would appreciate some advice on this.
    Thanks,
    jp

FTA UK channels are on Astra at 28.5e and most Hungarian channels are on Hotbird at 13e. So, you'd need a satellite dish fitted with two LNBs, one for each satellite. One receiver will do.

Some Hungarian channels are free and do not need any card. Check for them at http://www.lyngsat.com/freetv/Hungary.html.

I would guess that a viewing card that works on one satellite will not work on another as usually, they're for different audiences. Best plan to acquire Hungarian cards would be to enquire among Hungarian ex-pats as these cards are not normally sold in Ireland.

    Thanks for the reply.
The free to air hungarian channels would be great.
Forgive my ignorance but does 13e refer to thirteen degrees east. ie An actual direction in which the lnb is pointed?
Is it possible to use one lnb and move it between hotbird 13e and Astra at 28.5e?
Sorry if these questions are silly/confusing.

Would this system work to get me both?
It is a lot more expensive than the maplins one for 115 euro.

Fit 2 LNBs on the same dish using suitable brackets and join them via a Diseqc switch to the receiver.

13e means 13 degrees East of South or to put it another way, if you look directly south, that satellite is 13 degrees to your left.

That system would do what you want. It's more expensive partly because there's a motor and possibly because the tuner is better. You'd need to compare the specs. At a guess, a motor adds about 100 euro to the cost. I think an extra LNB and its bracket might add about the same.

A motorised system is very flexible, that one would get maybe 10 satellites subject to your having a good sight-line to the South. But changing from one channel to another is slow if they're on different satellites.

A non-motorised system with two LNBs would get you just two satellites but the channel changing would be nearly instantaneous as the tuner would use DISEQ to switch from one LNB to another.

Which you choose is partly a matter of preference and also a matter of how confident you are with installing it. I think a motorised install is a bit more tricky.
