    Hi there

Can someone give me some advise please.

I am looking at this card http://www.elara.ie/products/detailsfull.asp?productcode=ECE1161629
to pop into a Media Center 2005 Pc. I am planning to replace it with a Vista Ultimate machine in the near future.

The plan is to link it to my a standard Sky Box. Be able to record and send the recordings to my XBOXes and so on.

    Will this work?

    Thanks

    Mark

A friend of mine did this a few years ago but the information should still be relevant.

To connect the Sky box you'll need a tuner card such as the Hauppauge MCE150. If your Sky box has the s-video connection you should use that as it will give a better signal than the composite. You'll then need to connect the video and the stereo output from the Sky box to the input on the MCE 150. Once you've done that you can get MCE to scan for services, it should find the signal and you can then set the EPG to Sky.

IR Blaster: You'll need to attach the IR Blaster to the front of your Sky box so that MCE can change channels on the box.

In order to have Sky+ like functionality (i.e. record one channel while watching a different one) you will require two Sky boxes. This means getting a Multi-Room subscription which costs €15 a month.

Edit: It's possible to implement the MCE setup with a DVB-S card (like the Hauppauge card but for a satellite connection), hardware cam and Sky card so you won't need the second Sky box but it would be much more expensive to do. Also if Sky were to change their system it's possible that the DVB-S system would no longer work. Details here.

Hi, does anyone know if it is possible to take the second output (as if you want to send the Sky signal to a TV in another room) and use this output as the input to a tuner card on the PC? So, for instance you can then record TV on the PC and playback using the Media Center software?

    Thanks

    Hi,

Yes should be possible but you will need a terrestrial tv tuner card using RF (standatd aerial coax cable) NOT DVB (Digital Freeview) and just tune the tv card into the Sky signal like you would to BBC1 etc.

A good card would be the Hauppauge 150 .

Excellent thanks! I ordered a Hauppage card - not sure it is the one you recommended (1300 or some such number rings a bell). I covered the bases by ensuring it had the range of connections I might need.
