Ok firstly im 22 and have no motorbike license. next week im starting a job in naas and will have to leave from dublin city, so a bit of a nightmare gettin out im guessing. But anyway ive always wanted a roadbike for this exact thing, and i think its a resonable excues to get one. Im interested in the kawazaki mentioned. So firstly im gonna get my provisional A license then go insurance shopping. the questions i wanna ask is.

    1) can i get my A provisional in 2 weeks
    2) im already 5 years driving a car, i take it that means nothin in motorbike licenses
    3) can you list the insurers
    4) my limit for insurance would be just under €2000, do i have a hope for this bike ??
    5) finally im thinkin of importing this one from uk http://www.rossendale-kawasaki.co.uk/2007/rk/ubikes.php (its the 250r)
and is €4000 a good price?

Id really apreciate any advice and ways about this,so please help me out !

Doubt you'll get it in two weeks.

I got insured on a 250 Hornet with Quinn for 1700euro and i'm 21 on provo with 0 NCB. They'd be your best bet probably.

Also if gettin bike from uk you'll have to pay VRT on it. ros.ie says it will be 500euro.

4000 seems a good price aswell for the bike. sweet bike aswell

Quinn do an online insurance quote.

You'll also have to get someone to ride the bike over from the UK - you can't ride in the UK with an Irish provisional license. Since it's a brand new bike you'll also have to pay VAT here.

Don't forget to budget in for decent gear - helmet, jacket, boots, gloves, pants, L plates and of course lessons!

yeah ive checked out the quinn direct quote. I got quoted €1050 for 3rd party fire and theft, not too bad i guess. And im gonna have to think about the whole insurance in uk thing. O and today i visited the motor tax office and had no problem registering for provisional A, just gave in my car license and ill get it 10 days later. Also though my biggest worry is my training, my family are dead against this because they think it onky takes a big truck to fly by and drag me under it. But lessens are definatly happening, im used to moto cross, and have been for 4 years now so might help. But what i really want to know is can experienced people tell me their opinion on my situation and tell is this a good idea for me ? thanks.

I don't think motocross would help - it's a road bike - the biggest part of training will be roadcraft.

Did you not need to give them your theory test results as well?

no, they just asked for my license and that was it.I asked how much the fee was and they said nothing because my current car license is in date.

Get some road training before you buy a bike. Bikes aren't for everyone and you may not like it. I'd also hold off buying from the UK until you know what you want bikewise. Bikes vary in riding style alot more than cars do in driving styles. Get a cheap hack to run for the first while. Also phone every insurance company for quotes on bikes you think you'd like. hornet 250s etc are nice bikes but can be hard to get parts for because they're either new or Jap imports. €4000 for a bike might get you a factory restricted bike. The ZX250 R is supposed to be good but I don't know anyone with one or who will supply the parts for here. I'd probably go for it if I was beginning again but you will probably drop the bike and damage the fairings which will be expensive so get crash mushrooms.

afaik its not an insurance issue, but a licensing one... if the uk cops stop you and you're driving in the uk with an irish provisional license, you'll be in alot of trouble...

some of the shops can drive the bike to the ferry and meet you there, and you can then just push it on. Else you'll need to bring a friend (with full A), a van, or a friend with a van :p
