The great man has retired and cricinfo published an article containing 6 of his best knocks. The second entry relates to a tour of south africa in 2001/02 where he smashed 200. The cricinfo piece (below) states that he was subjected to some form of vicious internet rumour but after trawling the net I still can't find out what it was?

    anybody know?
    204* v South Africa, Johannesburg, 2001-02
An emotional man, Gilchrist cried on reaching one of many milestones in the innings after being the victim of a vicious internet rumour. He was brutal throughout the performance which at the time was the fastest double-century in Test history, his 204 coming from 213 balls. Eight sixes were thrashed, most over midwicket, as he showed his amazing power in a performance that would remain his highest.

Fair play Gilly, one of the best cricketers I've ever seen, in his professional conduct and manner, as well as a player. His class shone way above the bloody-mindedness that seems so attached with the Australian cricket team. Top bloke.

Sticking the words "adam gilchrist" internet rumour into Google, and the second link tells me, and after reading it, I recall it...

The rumour was one of his kids was fathered by another international cricketer, e.g. his wife had an affair with a team mate. Utterly denied, and its a pity its reared its ugly head. I'm not accusing you of being curious, it will raise an eyebrow to a lot of Cricinfo readers, who want to know more.

some idiot spread a rumour that his wife had an affair with miachel slater and glly's son harison was actually slater's son. the child was only three months at the time and gilly was away from his wife touring SA when the rumour broke. gilly being the gentleman he is was much affected. his wife later sued the website who settled out of court. the rumour was so ridiculous that gilly himself said later that he wld have laughed it off but at that time it was unbearable....

in all this i feel sorry for the SA team as it is he is difficult to contain on top of that such an incident.....:D

The great man has finally retired, it will take some player to fill his gloves.

It's a massive loss to Aussie and world cricket.

We'll all miss Gilly... even us South Africans :D
