    Hi all,

I had an old Dell Inspiron laptop lying around and i decided to get an enclosure for it and use it has an external drive.

So got the enclosure yesterday, extracted the hard drive today, put it all together and then i plugged it in to my other laptop and i got an error saying that there had been a power surge on the port. I clicked on the balloon and it told me to unplugged it and reset the port. Tried the same thing on my newish desktop and got the same error.

Has anyone encountered the same problem? Any advice as to what i should too?

You may have a bad enclosure or your hard drive is trying to draw a lot more current than it's supposed too.

Your USB port does not have enough power to run the external drive, try here for a twin/duel usb cable
http://www.addonics.com/products/power_adapter/usb_power_cable.asp or you may get one in
the likes of maplins or PC world etc.

    Cheers for ur help.
The enclosure came with a second cable, it's got a DC pin on one end and a usb at the other. Would you using that have the same effect?

It should, that cable will provide the extra power needed.
