Nursing in DCU - fees/grants

I am applying for nursing in DCU based on the points system (LC 2000) and as a mature student- points will be my preference.

I am currently finishing up a part time degree with DBS (which I paid for myself privately)- I will be deferring this for the time being.

I'm wondering does anyone know if I'm still entitled to the Free Fees Scheme as I am still an undergraduate?

Also- do you know if I would be entitled to any grants as a mature student/points system (age 25)?

    Thanks!

As long as you haven't done an undergraduate course in any non- private University or IT, there would be no fees. As for grants, I don't know but they have nothing to do with points.

    Thanks.

I initially did 3 months in TCD which was part of the Free Fees Scheme when I left school in 2000. But I presume this wont count...

I think it will, you will probably have to pay first year fees. Grant will be based on whether you support yourself and level of income last year.

Well if you were in TCD and left before the end of the first semester, you may only have to pay half fees for the first year which would amount to about €2500 roughly.

Jesus they've gone up a lot, that was what a whole year cost seven years ago.

Well, the cost of the course depends on what one you're doing. Arts courses would be cheaper than Science-y courses simply due to the lack of labs in the Arts courses. But I'd guess Nursing would be around €5,000 per year, so you might have to pay for half of that. Although I think there's a 5 year waiting period after you left your initial course so that you'd now be eligible for free fees again for all of your years, so you mightn't have to pay.

As for grants, check out the links in my sig, as well as http://www.studentfinance.ie/. If you've to pay for half the year, you might only get half a year's worth of grant for the first year but a full amount for the subsequent years.

I've just had a look at the studentfinance website. There is something on it under FAQs that suggests that as I received tax relief on the tuition fees I paid for Dublin Business School, I am not eligible for Free Fees?? You were right about the 5 year gap, as I studied in TCD more than 5 years ago and didn't complete it, this doesn't count towards my eligibility for the Free Fees Scheme.

I'm still a bit confiused though if I am eligible for free tuition fees for the Nursing Degree because of my studying at DBS. Any thoughts on this would be much appreciated- there is no contact details on the studenfinance website and DCU aren't answering me!

I'm not sure either if I should formally withdraw from the DBS course or just defer it in case I ever go back to it.
