Laptop problem - "Fixed Optical Drive not found"

I have an old (2001) laptop - Dell Latitude C840. The CD/DVD drive just stopped working the other day an I get a BIOS error message “Fixed Optical Drive not found” at boot. I have checked everything I can think of, but no joy. There is power in the drive (ie. it spins up CDs), but the system doesn’t recognise there is one [the drive] present. I borrowed a drive from a friend who has the same model and it works fine in my laptop (and mine doesn’t work in his), so its not connectors. The laptop is still in good condition and I want to keep using it, but really need a CD for multimedia coursework.

Any suggestions what could be wrong, or is it just dead????

I did look at buying an external USB CD/DVD drive, but my laptop is USB 1.1, so I don’t know if that would (a) work at all and (b) give satisfactory performance. Any opinions?

    Thanks in advance
