Hi, can anyone please help with this?
my pc doesnt seem to be reading the hard drive. at start up under physical disks it says in red "error occured". i ran the Dell resource CD and and gives me the following error code - 0F00:137B, and this message:

"Msg IDE device failed: Blank media or no media is present in optical drive. Test requires media with data resource CD, installation CD".

i've called Dell tech support but they're not available on weekends. i have emailed them, but if anyone has any ideas i'd be greatful. This seemed to happen while running the scandisk utility. only two days to go on the warranty!!

Any clicking noises coming from the hard disk?

no clicking noises, it crunches for a few minutes as it normally does at startup, then freezes.

I just had that error myself yesterday. Had to go into setup (F2 at boot) and change Boot seq to CD/DVD before harddrive. I then loaded my Windows Vista software install CD and shut down.

I then turned the computer back on and was asked to hit any key to use CD. So I did.

Windows Vista software told me I had an error and I could either let them fix it for me or I could reinstall Vista. I let the software FIX the error. It worked.

I checked for viruses afterwords but found none. Have no clue what happened. It had been working fine the night before.

do you have a RAID system? according to Dell, Apple software can cause a conflict in the RAID. I ran the diagnostics as they told me and it solved the problem. By coincidence, that same hard drive failed last week, but it was one and a half years later so i don't think the problem was related.

Sorry, don't recognize RAID or know what it is.

I have Windows Vista ultimate Dell xps 420. Sorry.

RAID is a system which shares data across two hard drives. Either RAID 0, which strips the data across each drive, or RAID 1, where one drive mirrors the other. So you would have two hard drives, but in windows it would just appear to be one drive so you may not even know you have it. I bought my PC from the Dell outlet store so it was all setup when i bought it. To check, start the PC and it will show up during startup (assuming you can get that far). If you don't have RAID, there may be another cause of the problem.

Thanks I did not know that information.

However, my system (so far) is back in working order after using my Windows Vista Install CD that allows for repairing problems or reinstalling the OS.

I just meant that I haven't a clue WHY I got the orig error in the first place.

    Have a good day.

hopefully the scandisk fixed the error. make sure to keep your work backed up in case anything goes wrong!
