    Hi All,

I have naturally fairly dark brown hair in which I have been getting blonde highlights for the last few years. The thing is that I just can't afford to maintain them at the moment and I would like to dye over them with just one dark blonde colour. Has anyone else done this sucsessfully and if so how? Cheers.

    Hey Katie!

I have also been getting highlights for a good few years - the upkeep of being blonde certainly does add up!

I have never had the courage to do it at home...highlights are generally a few different colours which give a natural appearance to your overall colour - I know you can get highlights yourself to do at home but I'm not sure you come off with the same effect.

My sister puts a full blonde colour in her hair at home and saves a fortune but her hair is in very bad condition, is all one colour so doesn't look natural and she does have to do it every 3 weeks or so as a full color gives you less time to "get away" with having roots!

My suggestion is the only answer I have found to this dilemma...Continue going to the salon, but get a few low lights in it - that will buy you some time bewteen each salon visit as your roots won't be as noticeable when they do start to grow back!

A shop-bought tint won't lift dark brown hair up to blonde, the peroxide in it isn't strong enough.

Thanks for the replies. To be honest that is kind of what I thought. Any suggestions on what I could do with the roots to keep me going for another few weeks?

I have naturally dark blonde hair but have been highlighting it alot lighter over last few years. I also couldn't afford highlights anymore but didn't want to to chance dying over them myself. I went to the Hairdresser and they put in an all over colour for me. It cost 40 euro but well worth it. Its back to my natural colour now so it can grow all it wants!!!!!

I did the same thing - asked the hairdresser to dye my highlighted hair the same colour as my roots. It was a bit of a shock at the time because I was so used to the old colour. I'm used to it now though and I'm happy because it's so much easier to maintain and much much cheaper.
