"Members of FAIR many of who paid a high price to remain British have recently been issued with UK passport written in Irish. Such was their shock and anger that they contacted our office to complain. We took this matter up with Members of Parliament in order to get an explanation as to why UK passports issued in Northern Ireland carried the Irish language.

We believe that UK passports issued elsewhere in the United Kingdom are different and do not carry any regional minority languages. This is clearly a dilution of our Britishness and forever denotes UK citizens resident in Northern Ireland as different and lesser than their counterparts in England, Scotland and Wales.

This is especially galling as the DUP promised an end to the upsurge in Irish language. However it would appear that the legislation they shelved was merely a side show while the real use of Irish to lay claim to every person in N Ireland moves forward.

This is not the case in the rest of the UK and we are sickened that those in our country who fought and sacrificed most to remain British are dealt such an insult. We will be raising this with MPs at Westminster as it is clear that local MLA’s have no real say. We also intend to take up the fight with the Foreign and Commonwealth office which for decades has operated an agenda of diminishing diluting and destroying our Britishness.

Tallyho and all that.. Welcome to Ireland. Your passport MAY have phrases as gaeilge! I'm sure it will completely imbalance your life and call your existence into question.

The part you emboldened is fairly loaded.

What we need to remember is that there are still elements on this island who believe that the entire island is British.
Most actual British people (those who live in Britain) have no idea of this and don't realy care.

As bad as the dick who wrote that letter is, there are just as many republicans who are just as rabid.
Each side will always have their radical nutballs.

The writer is obviously quite deluded and oblivious to the fact that mand of his countrymen want to speak Irish.
Best to let him and his ilk die off.

Personally, I think that the general consensus here in the Republic, the North and in Britain is becoming more and more "who cares anymore?"

I grew up in a nationalist family. Have always believed that the north is ours.

However, I, like many other folk have become somewhat indifferent to the juvenile dealings/non-dealings between the politicians up north and decided to get on with things.

Some years ago, I admittedly would have felt a certain tightness in the chest if I was introduced to someone from the north who I knew was Unionist/Protestant. Sad I know. But I know that many other people would've felt a slight prejudice like that at the time as I did.

But now, having worked in England and worked closely with numerous people from Northern Ireland, my belief that there is so much to be gained by knowing and engaging with the person and so much to be lost by the making assumptions and having prejudices, has been reinforced.

One of them in particular I'm still good mates with. It would be painful to think that I wouldn't be friends with him had i met him before we opened up our minds as a nation and had avoided each other just because I was from the Republic and he was from Northern Ireland.

My political beliefs still hold true, as do his. But we're both educated enough to understand our differences and indeed rip the piss out of each other regarding the same.

Most people in Britain really dont give a XXXX for what they think in Norm Iron!
This rant would largely fall on deaf ears, followed by " but you live in Northern Ireland, you've got some irish in your passport!"

One thing not mentioned, does the passport have "ulster scots" in it as well, the "language" of the unionists.

Here is an extract from the passport office website about the "irish" on the passport.

    http://www.ips.gov.uk/passport/about-biometric-design.asp

What are the additional design features on the biometric passport?
We have chosen birds as a theme in the updated passport to symbolise freedom to travel. The birds are native to Britain and were chosen because they provided a good scope for developing security features. In addition, the British biometric passport also includes the languages of the British Isles clearly displayed on the inside front page. This is an addition to the passport design and includes English, Welsh and Scottish Gaelic.

There is no such thing as a 'Welsh passport' which is the point of FAIR I believe. Nor is there a passport that says you come from England or Scotland.

All Brits have the same passport except it seems for the ones from the North who get a bit of Irish on it.

I've done a bit of searching and it seems that that UK passports are in English, Welsh and Scots Gaelic.

The guy just presumed that it was in Irish as the passport was issued in the North but never seemed to consider Scotlands native language :)

Yeah Cead Siubhail is Gaelic for passport. In Irish it's just Pas.
But to the untrained British eye I guess it's an easy mistake.

    It's actually Scot Gaelic?

    ah that's just ****ing brilliant...:D

I'm afraid my level of Irish is so weak i assumed it was Irish too.
The irish would appear to be:
Ríocht Aontaithe na Breataine Móire agus Thuaisceart Éireann

    Scot
Rioghachd Aonaichte Bhreatainn is Eireann a tuath

Definitely Scots Gaelic. The giveaway is the fadas, they go the other way to Gaeilge.

The fact is, Britain doesn't give a sh*t about the people in NI - so their ghey little complaint will fall on deaf ears in parliament.

Just to make it all the more amusing, the guy who posted that article is based in Scotland, as is the organisation. You'd THINK they'd know, particularly when there are some signs (Queen Street Station in Glasgow has "Welcome to Queen Street station" in Scots Gaelic on one of it's signs) that have the language, but there you go.

Bigotry is clearly blind to the obvious.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ulster_Scots_language
Of the four peripheral varieties of Scots - the others being Insular, Northern and Southern Scots - Ulster Scots is the only one whose traditional written form is commonly indistinguishable from the main Central Scots variety.
    LOL

    BTW: They've found us
    http://www.caltonradio.com/ForumsPro/viewtopic/t=37129.html#37129
And as pointed out there if you want Gaeilge on your passport you can. Just has to be an ROI passport instead of a UK one.

I hope they've gone ahead and raised their Protest. Whoever receives their whingings will probably get a great laugh out of responding to an address in Glasgow to remind them the language is actually one of their own.

Just read through one or two things on their 'site' or - bigots anyonomous. Such a waste of bandwidth. For example there is some muppet who keeps preaching about how we are all Nazi's and live in a 'terrorist state' ROFL! :D, another who seems to think we should reunite with the UK and someone else who keeps talking about 'Ulster Resistence' when there is a United Ireland - talk about a time warp!

I had a look at the link to see if they'd discovered their mistake. I was too scared to look at the rest of the site. Now I know my fears were justified! It scares me that people still think like this. Seriously, who cares anymore? Everyone just wants to get on with things and be happy.

I wonder will they retract their lovely letter now?

I hope they do, hell I hope news stations picks up on their mistake and everyone gets a good laugh.

It is worrying that there are people like that out there though.

More here (another thread, same forum)
    http://www.caltonradio.com/ForumsPro/viewtopic/t=37187.html

This thread recognizes that it's SG, not Irish, and that all UK passports has Welsh and SG.

Seems Willie Frazer spoke before thinking and now are being the target of many a laugh.
