So after thismornings disgrace of the M50 I got into work almost two hours late.

I live in Malahide and work in Sandyford so it was an interesting ‘motorway’ drive I must say lol
Anyways, Once everyone made it to the office we all were moaning about have much of a house of cards Dublin’s transport system is, and we all agreed that based on this morning’s ‘emergency response’ from the garda, that the entire city could ground to a halt if just 5 Protestors/Lunatics with cars wanted to prove a point or something. All they have to do is cause VERY MINOR accidents in some strategic Dublin locations, then by the time our lighting speed Traffics Corps start getting it sorted.... the damage will have already been done for hundreds of commuters.

    CAR ONE:
Cause a small accident shortly after the M50 South Blanchardstown off Ramp.
This would render the West Link Southbound inaccessible and traffic would halt.
The potential tailback would cripple all other on ramps as well as the roads and areas feeding them.
The M1-M50 Roundabout would develop tailbacks onto the M1 bringing it down to one lane.

    CAR TWO:
Another small fender-bender M50 Northbound before the merge at Blanchardstown
Same as the first one, traffic would tailback to Firhouse with delays around Dumdum, surrounding roads along the M50 would cripple.

    So that’s the M50 gone!!

    CAR THREE:
Accidently hit the ass of a lorry on the east link bridge heading south.
Need I say more? One lane would be closed with rubbernecking destroying the other lane.
Rock Road would die. Port tunnel would be closed leading to more M1 hell.

    CAR FOUR:
Whoops! Accidently hit a level crossing barrier at the rail line and broke it.
So that’s the Dart line and intercity delayed and closed while engineers make their way to check it out and fix it.

    CAR FIVE:
Let’s face it if a plastic bag gets into the way of the LUAS things slow down.
If a car was to tap one of the things say at the red cow bridge.
Closed and delayed for the morning while Connex going checking everything. Plus added delays to trams already in the city.

So that’s it, Dublin City Closed for business!
All of it based on these accident occurring before, and more importantly how long they took to sort.
I bring all this up to highlight the fact that Dublin Traffic Corps urgently need to put disaster plans in place. At the moment the only piece of road traffic accident emergency plans we have in place at the moment are for the port tunnel. Noting else.

Although he possibility of all the above happing is one in a million, If 5 madmen wanted to prove a point or a demonstration and carried out all that between 6.30am and 7am......
I think it’s safe to say I’d be having a sick day! lol :D

    What’s anyone else think?
Do ya agree that the already struggling Dublin transport system is dangerously open to traffic chaos, to garda don’t have the plans or resources to respond too!

I would love if all this happened! (Obviously without injury or death!) You'd have radio and tv programmes filled with stories of woe from people stuck in traffic for 10 hours.

    People would complain.

People would say something needs to be done.

    Nothing would change.

But it would be pretty funny for those of us who don't have to travel those roads!

What do people expect if they live in Malahide and work in Sandyford? This is what causes the congestion...

The odds of these 5 events (or even 2 of 5 or 3 of 5) happening are ridiculous. And if they do happen Im going to call you a terrorist.

Disaster Plans count for little. A resourceful (actual) terrorist can find out what plans already exist and create their attack to work completely against such.

luckly we arnt off raping other countries then. Terrorists could have a field day with this country with out having to strap on any bombs.

    Two hours?
Dart from Malahide to Pearse, stroll 15 minutes to Stephens Green and get the Luas to Sandyford.

Your current commute would be longer and this new option is far less stressful.

As the TheBigLebowski said, it's people like you who cause congestion.
Sure buy a scooter and you'll zip through the traffic.
Only a fool would try to drive across (actually around) the city in peak time in a car and then complain about traffic.

    Yep, a scooter ftw! :)

    Why should it be?

If someone sneezes within a 2 mile radius of the M50 the thing shuts down, surely everyone knows that by now?

Ahh puiblic transport. Despite living 1/2 mile from the train station in my town i have to drive 25 miles to kildare to get the train there because they dont stop at the correct station for me to get into work on time and the evening service would mean i have to wait 1 hour 30 minutes for a connecting train.
I arrived there this week and they said sorry the train is not coming its taken a different route.

You dont need errorists to bring the train service to a halt..the managers of irish rail are quite capable fo doing that themselves

The garda response yesterday has f*ck all to do with it....the lack of a hard shoulder, due to "road upgrades" where crashed vehicles could be pushed to and which emergnecy services could access any injured is the problem. That and the tolll chokepoint that NRA, the AA and NTR say don't exist; the elephant in the room.
We left Dundalk yesterday morning at 5.55am....was outside the job in sandymount drinking coffee at 7.10am listening to the radio and laughing. We have a no M50 policy since one of the FUBAR incidents in the summer...we go right through town now no matter where the job is...might take a bit longer sometimes but at least there's a get out if things go tits up, rather than sitting in two lanes of hell for hours...

I think we could make this happen. Then we could all go home to bed for the day.

How about one day this week? I vote Tuesday, giving us two days to plan!

    I think I'd change jobs :)

Maybe there's no choice but to forego a hard shoulder on some of the M50 upgrade. If it means it'll be built quicker then fair enough. No avoiding the fact that there'll be hellish moments on what is a basically a massive building site. That's what you get when you build a glorified dual carriageway instead of an urban motorway.

Read Gridlock by Ben Elton, and you'll suddenly see someone has thought of this before :D

your Car 4 train/dart scenario isn't remotely plausible seeing as there are 4 different train lines into the city centre.

also, there's the m4/N4 all the way into the CC as well which would be pretty unaffected apart from people getting off at the palmerstown/lucan exit and heading in from there.

    then there's the buses....

Oh it's great to be 15 mins from work :) The only bit of the M50 I have to go near (and I have a choice if I want), is the bit heading south from the Sandyford exit, which is always clear (*touches wood).
