As 500GB drives start at less than €100 these days, I would advise looking into doing it yourself.

Only certain disk models yield good results but this information is not hard to find.

    Can a standard Sky+ box handle a 500GB HDD?

I was under the impression the biggest it could use was 250GB.

I upgraded my own Sky+ PVR3 with a Samsung 250GB drive, works a charm, unlike the crap Maxtor it replaced.

Since September 07, an epg update appears to have raised the limit to 1TB.

I recently put a 500GB disk in my Pace V3 using copy+ and it is working perfectly. I used a disk I had spare after clearing lots of clutter off the PC and it is a perfect clone of the original, just with 5 times more space.

Earlier reports were that you needed a fast-starting disk but the one I used takes about twice as long to spin-up from standby than the original but apart from a small delay in loading the planner from cold it is not causing any problems at all. I reckon the software has been altered to cater for a wider range of disks now that 80/160GB and P-ATA disks in general are getting hard to source.

It is just a shame it is not possible to take back the 80GB of my disk that $ky are holding hostage for their crappy anytime service.

    I bought a 250 GB from Xtendedplay.
    It was delivered promptly.
Very easy to fit with clear consise instructions and has not given any problems in the last 2.5 years. It comes with a torx screwdriver kit as well for getting the sky box open. You have to state your model when buying so you are sure you're getting the right drive. They also have a faq which will help you identify your model.
Also, the drives come preconfigured to run quietly and with error correction turned off etc. etc. so the drive works as efficiently as possible.
My sky+ box now runs cooler than it did previously too.
