    Hi guys,

Simple problem...all I want to do is play a few tunes that a friend put on my external HD for me....

When i double click... iTunes opens....but doesnt play...if I add to library it goes through the 'processing' but they dont appear in the library after it.

I dont want them to be copied to the iTunes folder, so I unchecked that box in the preferences.

    Any ideas?

    Am I acting retarded?!

What type of files are they? If they're not mp3 or aac then iTunes mightn't be compatible with them.

Is your Mac accepting the external HD and is able to take files from it, first off? If not, then your Mac won't be able to accept the HD, let alone iTunes. If it is, do a quick click on the music files and drag onto your Mac. Once there, move them to your music folder for iTunes and you should be fine. I'd suggest maybe you re-check the Copy to Music Folder and then delete the copies at a later stage :)

Thanks for reply....but one small problem...the HD has 50,000 songs.

Cant copy them to Macbook obviously.

Yeah it reads them no problem, they play in quicktime.

Just not in iTunes....surely iTunes can do a simple task of playing songs?!

What file format is the external hdd? NTFS? That might be the problem. Did your friend add these mp3s using a PC?

    Yeah its NTFS

He did indeed use a PC.

But why would they play in other players on my mac and not iTunes, the default player?

    Thanks for reply!

Macs can't write to NTFS drives, they can barely read them. He should have formatted it as FAT32. Give it back to him and see if he'll do that. iTunes must need to write to the file or create a DS_Store file or something in order to add the file to it's library. I don't know if there's a way around this. For now try copying the files you want over to your mac.

    *nods*

    That makes sense.

    Good thinking Batman!
