I have taken on the task that I am going to do a cutom paint job on my JG G36C... I am going to do an old style tiger camo paint style on it and then spray on a clear lacquer over it to seal it and stop it from chipping when I am skirmishing with it...

I have a few stills included to show the initial stensils that I pencilled last night... Fingers crosssed it will go well...

cool looking so far - just wonder, have you made up stencils or are you going to cut em out?

or are you going to airbrush em?

nothing made as yet, i am in cork the moment so i am going to get some syntec paints in a craft shop tomorrow that won't weaken the plastic and then I am to see if I can hand paint it. I know hand painting is risky but I am willing to take that risk as I will be able to blend in some of the colours so that it looks better as a camo...

What I might do if I need to is cut out stensils with the 'lacks' craft night and then get some sprays and do it that way, but it will all depend on getting paints that won't effect the body of it...

be careful wit the selection of paint - synthetics can be just as harmful to certain plastics - or if they've no effect they simply may not adhere. Unless the paint is specifically designed for a specific plastic - you are really just taking a chance. There's a fine line between attacking & dissolving and getting a proper key to simply sitting on the surface until scraped at which point it just walks off... Overcoating with a clear lacquer (while helping) wont make it stick any better - the bond is only going to be as good as it's weakest link.

I'd suggest painting a small test spot somewhere inconspicious, leaving it at least 48 hours (better still - wait a week) and then have a go with your nail to see how it performs. If it's crap; go to plan b (krylon or similar), if it's ok - go for it!

    Very nice stencil design btw.:)

Have bilt and painted many small scale moddels, mostley warhammer 40000,and larger scale ww2 tanks. as i have played war games with these i found that the larger tanks are moved around and transported to an from paint has chipped. what worked for me was using the finest wet&dry sand paper, just damp, and verry lighty rub the surface, then when dry using waterbased paints from the games workshop (most good hobby & toy shops have) ask warhammer paints. work perfict on plastic and metal. thay also supply matt clear cote, only prob have to use brushes, unless you have an airbrush.
ps a **** brush will do a **** job. wont cost the world eather, did my helmet. an bbs wont chip it. (well depends how close im shot in the head) .. looks good sofar.

Very good point there Ozzie. The rub with a bit of fine paper will make a huge difference (good mechanical bond as opposed to chemical one)

I've used Vallejo waterbased vinly acrylics on models (high impact polystyrene I think. quite similar to the ABS on your AEG) with fantastic results - great adhesion too. http://www.princeaugust.ie/ sell them online or you could get them in most good model shops too.

With WB acrylics - build up the coats as opposed to trying to achieve the finish in 1 or 2 coats. Far better results. Maybe think about getting an airbrush - you can get cheap ones which run off a cannister of aerosol - should last for the job (then chuck it). Might give you more control and a better finish.

    remember; practice makes...

As an afterthought - careful with the pencil marks - graphite will give adhesion failures. Also- very importantly; you need to degrease the AEG before you paint it, especially around the grips and anywhere you hold it. I use IPA (Iso Propyl Alcohol) because of it's sensitivity to most plastics, relative safety and anti-static properties (and I get it in work, which helps too:))
If you use detergent - be sure and rinse it very thoroughly... nothing like an alkaline/soap residue to give adhesion problems. Wear plastic/rubber gloves - keep fingerprint grease off it too.

Thats the job. couldent have said it better myself. And princeaugust is just down the road from me. Thers a lot more to a paint job than just slap it on and hope for the best. IT can take some times days to get a desired result. nothing worse than people saying,
WHAT THE HELL HAVE U DONE TO IT. if somethings nice, every one likes it, be it airsoft gun or tank or whatever. So dont rush it, not even for game sake. would love to see how it works out, so post more pics when you finish. ps. some good lookin shealas work in princeaugust to... ;)

what I will be doing is painting a little then clearing the pencil and then degreasing and etc.. I am going to try and make my spare bedroom a clean room for all of this...

I will certainly keep the pics coming to show ye updates

Anyways, here is an update to my paint job...

I got some acrylics that wouldn't effect plastics, the first coat is on at the moment, I am waiting for it to dry fully and then do some maintanence on it... When that is done I am gonna do a varnish over the paint to protect and strenghten it.

The first pic has a very bright light on it that has made the colour look a lot brighter than it really it...

cheers, i have to sand it a little to take the edges of and then touch it up and that way, i can then keep it a matt colour so it doesn't draw attention to itself

it was re branded or taken over or something.
either way, krylon is just the brand, not the paint.

cheers for all the comments, I was thinking about darking the brown a little, the lighter green is darker than the pic makes it, but I will do a few more coats and see how it goes...

i think i remember he has a BE cheapo SL8 and wants to fit all the decent workings of a G36 into the crappy SL8., exactly what i was gonna do and should work nicely. then just decided to get a proper SL8 instead.,

I was thinking of doing that too actually, but i decided a MagPul PRS would look better than the SL8 stock... but i do plan on getting a Star SL9 at some stage

Actually does anyone have a G36 bipod they're willing to sell?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,641 ✭✭✭zero19

The SL8 body is quite good but very long, the thumbhole adds good stability when firing it and i love how it looks, twas my first AEG but has crap internals hence this project

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 985 ✭✭✭Mark_Sc

Sure a G36 is the same length as an SL8, no?

he sent me a vest instead of a coat recently and he just told me to keep it and sent the coat on in the post, the cost of the vest was likely less than the cost of having it shipped back to be honest
