    Hi all
before starting i have to say my knowledge of mac's is very limited i have an old 500mhz imac which i gave to my neice just for the internet anyhow i had just installed the driver for her 3G usb broadband modem and was in a hurry to go some where so instead of rebooting it from the OS i ended up just powering it of from the socket which was foolish i know .But when i went to power it back up it just hangs . I can hear a bong sound straight away over the speakers and then i get the grey back round with the black apple sign but nothong eles .
The OS is 10.4. something ? its not its not 10.4.5 its below that a mate has given me a set of cd boot disc's to reinstall the os or fix it .but im ashamed to say im have trouble with it what is the short cut keys to get into the boot opions on the mac or whars the best way of doing this ???
anyhelp here would be great lads and i thanks you in advance

Is this iMac an early G3 model (coloured all-in-one with CRT screen), or a G4 (flat screen sitting on white half-sphere)?

The issue might be that the optical drive on an early model iMac will only read CD-ROMs, and the 10.4 discs that you have been loaned are actually DVDs - boot the mac up and slip in the first disc immediately while holding down the C key on the keyboard - if the disc gets ejected, it's because it's a DVD and can't be read by the CD-ROM optical drive.

A couple of other questions, to help see what needs doing -

Is there info that you want on the Mac (or could you put up with blowing it all away to start again?)

Do you have access to another Mac and an external hard drive with Firewire connection? (you can use this Mac to create a disc image of the DVD discs and boot from it on the problem iMac, which will let you install the system again)

PS: are the disc that you've been loaned for a particular Mac model (which one?) or are they for installing 10.4 on any Mac?

If they are discs for a particular model, they are unlikely to be of much use to you, unless that model is an iMac of a very similar age.

    hold C @ power-on to boot from cd/dvd.

hold alt @ power-on to bring up a list of bootable volumes.
