Has anyone seen the new Cork City buses? Seem to be replacing a lot of older buses on the number 5 and 8, fancy new paint job.!

Is this a sign of things to come perhaps?! Or am I just being hopeful...:D Seem to remember hearing that double deckers were being reintroduced into Cork, anyone have info on that?

I've had the pleasure to ride these chariots on the No. 8 over the past week or so, only major difference to the eye on the inside is the upholstery is a striking red instead of the grey of old, i think the seats up the front are slightly arranged differently to the other buses.

On the topic of the double deckers, apparently they were due in 2008 but who'd be surprised if they ended up with the rest of BEs double deckers servicing the Greater Dublin Area.

Limerick also has those new buses!
Nothing new or special only the red seating (as mentioned) and orange display instead of green.

Unless there are other new buses, these buses are at least two rows longer than the old ones; I think they may in fact be four rows longer. There's a rather long clausterphobic area at the back of the bus where the elevated floor is.

There is a small allocation of double-deck coaches for Cork due in early this year and 12 city deckers later.

In fairness...they do have a slightley revised paint scheme which is why you noticed them but there are quite a few 07 reg buses in Cork too...(they are the same VWL class as the older buses....)

(Limericks Buese no doubt are new too but they arent VWL's....Lmerick mainly has Scanias I think and Waterford Mercedes.....i think thats right but my Bus Spootters book is in my other Anorak...

There seems to be a lot more leg room in the new buses. I'm finally not nearly crippled everytime I use one. :)

I am ridiculously excited at the thought of double decker buses. It makes me so nostalgic...

They don't appear longer on the outside but as one poster said there must be 4 extra rows at the back! Gets a bit claustrophobic but at least theres a good few seats.

Bus Eireann - new Cork city bus routes

Bus Éireann Launches Two New Routes in Cork

    Monday 21 April 21 2008

Two new bus services which will enable hundreds more people in Cork city to choose public transport on a daily basis are to be officially launched by Bus Éireann today Monday April 21st.

The new No 10A and the No 16 routes, serving the well populated suburbs of Skehard and Rochestown respectively, are operated by a number of new low floor wheelchair accessible city buses, manufactured in Northern Ireland by Wrights Bus.

Funding provided to Bus Éireann under Transport 21 to acquire additional buses for the city has made the introduction of the new routes possible.

The new services will be officially launched by the Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr Donal Counihan and the Chairman of Bus Éireann, Dr John Lynch at the Clarion Hotel, Lapp’s Quay at 12.00 hrs.

Dr John Lynch said:“Under Transport 21, Bus Éireann is introducing 30 vehicles into the Cork fleet in 2008, a combination of additional and replacement city buses, single deck coaches and double deck coaches. All vehicles are wheelchair accessible and the addition of these new buses to the fleet in Cork means that the city service fleet is now 100% fully accessible. The additional vehicles are enabling Bus Eireann to improve existing services for our customers, and to introduce new services, such as the 10A and the 16, for which there is strong local demand."

He added: “These new services are creating jobs opportunities. In Cork alone, 20 additional drivers will be recruited this year to work the new routes.”

Had the misfortune to be on the no. 16 bus that got lost last Friday! The driver didn't seem to know where he was going, I guess understandable on a new route. The service is very handy though, saves a lot of people from the hoards on the Carrigaline buses.

for some reason they are only on the southside routes. The older buses are still on the northside routes! ?

The no. 8 goes up the northside (to Lotabeg). The 5 also goes across the river;)

Of course, sure aren't all the BE bigwigs living over on the Southside.

Places in the southside like Douglas get excellent, frequent service, while places on the northside like the no 3 get an awful, infrequent and inadequate service.

And with all the new routes, why isn't there a new high frequency service along the new mallow road, serving Blackpool shopping center, etc. There should really be frequent double deckers on this route, running to a park and ride facility along the mallow road.

    1. Douglas has more people. and has destinations beyond it.

    2. the 3 doubles up as the southside Ballyphehane service.

3.agree with your last point (except they dont have to be DDs)

the only 'frequent' service in douglas would be the no 6 bus which is every ten minutes due to a high demand, when it used come every 20 minutes it would ALWAYS at off peak times be crowded and people were constantly being left behind, they decided id would be fiancially benefical at the time to add the 10 minute service, where they would lose money of the no 3 was every 10 mins, as far as ive heard they are considering running the 8 lotabeg - bishopstown every 10 mins too.

other than that there is the no 7 every 20/25 minutes same as the number 3, only the number 7 has less traffic blackspots on the route thats what causes the 3 to be delayed so much, it gets stuck in traffic around the schools in ballyphehane, turners cross, then town then the quays then it has to go all through blackpool....no wonder they can never get there on time.

so mainly its because to an extent douglas isn't as traffic heavy as other bus routes!

also for those who were saying we should bring in a private company, without public funding we may have a service which will always be on time, but outer suburbs such as carrigaline ballincollig...etc will lose their regular bus routes maybe down to two buses a day (1 into town 1 out)

and routes like the 3,6,7,8,10 will be put to a bus an hour (if we're lucky and the private company fancies losing money) they may even drop service to peak times only as unless they fill a bus with people (or charge about €3/€4 each) they will lose money and no company is going to run a service at a loss.

routes like the 16,5,1, 19 may very well be dropped to one run a day or dropped all together, so as crappy as our service is nowadays (and i should know i depend on buses for work) its better than going private!

    just my two cents ;)
