As far as I know, you'll be stung with import tax alright, you pay, Kea refund. Isn't that how it works?

Nope, kea make no claims that they will refund vat, unless you're in the UK.

I bought a 70-200mm f4 IS last year from urgalaxy and i just wanted to mention that these hong kong sellers are extremely competitive and if you grill them a bit with questions like: 'can you offer me the same customs terms that you offer UK customers?' Theyre more than likely to accept, especially when youre buying expensive lenses. Also if the seller isnt willing to pay the customs/tax difference dont ask them to send it as gift, ask them to send it as repaired item under warranty. Just remember to tick the box where it says 'send a copy to my email address' every time you send them a message, so you'll have everything logged. Finally, be persistent, just think of it as buying a car, ask them if they can offer you anything extra, Tripod mount ring, MACK warranty etc.

No need to worry. The chances of you being stung for duty are remote in the extreme. A friend of mine took delivery of a Canon 24-105L from an Ebay HK shop yesterday and there was nothing to pay. Saved €300 on the Irish price. This friend has never been caught for duty *to my certain knowledge*. I of course, Mr Taxman, would not dream of buying from Hong Kong and believe it is my civic duty to pay top whack to an Irish retailer. And so do nearly everybody on this forum which is why I would really urge those that don't TO KEEP QUIET ABOUT IT.

I have done lots of online shopping from Amazon.com over the years and never got stung for tax but recently I did. The postman told me that the authorities were clamping down on imports as he was collecting far more cheques than ever before.

I don't know if its the same with UPS, DHL etc.

From my experience UPS seems to be always hit whenever I use them so they must be too honest :(

Have to add to this, received my 70-200 f2.8 this morning too, didn't get stung for anything. :D

UPS apparently do it automatically - they seem to have appointed themselves customs agents and just look at the total on the delivery note, add on the tax and issue an invoice* - the delivery guy won't deliver unless you pay up.

*Of course, this might have something to do with the fact they charge you €13.50 every time for the privilege of them processing your tax for you
